Naga world champion / Rubber guard vs Wrestling

Prior to the event I told Cora she will more than likely face a wrestler since up north texas and Oklahoma there are a lot of kid wrestlers. ANd sure enough, what did she get in her first match.....a wrestler..... a side note: wrestling and takedowns are her worst area of this sport.... enjoy as both kids put on a show.

Representing the 10th planet system all the way!!!!! Of all the matches I watched, and over 500 kids competitors, I didn't see any other kid putting up the rubber guard.

Damn homie. She's a beast. Major props to her. Can't wait to see what kind of beast she'll be in her teens. Awesome to watch. I hope my little girl develops an interest in BJJ.

Well not a really beast yet...although she kills with the bear crawl....lol anyways from my 2 years in this sport, I noticed that this sport is growing. THere are more and more kids at our gym and at every tournaments. WHo knows, but maybe in years to come, this might be an Olympic event. But most importantly, this is the best self defense for girls. But I always tell my daughter to never hit anyone first, if she have too, just choke them out., therefore there's no hitting....:):)

It was a good fight, but in the end, the boy was way too strong and big that she can't even get to her game plan...ie Rubber Guard...:):) Anyone of you out there that is a coach or just know what they are talking about, please chyme in. WHat can she do in this situation to have a better outcome against someone who is bigger and stronger. Her guard usually is very strong for kids her size, but this boy bust through her guard so easily.

On the Rubber guard vs Wrestling match, Cora let the boy take her down so that she can pull the rubber guard. It was our plan...give up 2 points for a submission.

When it comes to grappling, the only way to beat something is to study it thoroughly. Whatever you're getting smashed with, learn it. That way you know the holes in that game and it's a thousand times easier to defend. If wrestling is her weakest, drill it until it's her strongest.

That is so true.... oh believe me, we are going to pick up her training to another notch. Since she is being over powered by this kid, I will have her roll with our 80-90 lbs boys at the gym all the time. If she can sub them on a consistant basis, she will be ready for this boy the next time.

The same thing happened to one of ours, he got controlled by a strong wrestler. So, we have to modify our kids' training as well. Our problem is we're so used to chill rollin at the gym with no time limits, just working skill and technique, and we forget that a tourney roll is faster and sometimes the opponent gets pretty crazy, especially if they see a 10TH Planet flag. haha

Sometimes you can't stop a wrestler's takedown. just roll with it though.
Many times you are gonna be outsized by your opponent but you'll learn to deal with them with more reps on the mat. The tournament is not the recommended place to see how you do against bigger opponents. In the gym, try going with much bigger people. You'll be overwhelmed at first because of their strength, but you'll eventually see the pattern.

Cora roll with boys that are much bigger than her all the time. They weighs between 80-100 lbs. THe boys in the gym that are her size really don't want to go against her anymore cus she will make them look bad in front of their parent. The only ones that can put up a fight with her now are the bigger boys. And yes, you guys are right...tournament kids moves a lot faster than in the gym. Now we have to train for time instead of rolling around 5-10 min. So now instead of a long distance run, we will be focusing on sprints per say. We now have a higher goal.... Kids Pan AM. A lot of coaches saw what she can do and they start talking about Kids Pan AM.

I would suggest doing more of the local tournaments until Cora gets good at controlling much stronger opponents. I don't think her technique is to a point to be going up against BOYS that outweigh her by that much. If this is what she wants, you may want to make sure she's not setting herself for disaster.
Good thing about jiu jitsu and her age, is that she has time on her side. Cora and father: please enjoy the journey.

Slick Rick: brother I like your name..very catchy....anyways since we started competing in June 2012, Cora has done everyone of the local tournament, one every month. She came from the beginnner division and progress up to the expert division in just 6 short months. And every lost she have during that time, she has avenged it already. During her rise to the top, she has been tapped out only once and the other lost was only by points because we didn't understand the game yet. But since then, she have tapped out everyone of those boys that beat her and then some. For kids in her division, the ones that goes to tournaments as often as we do, she have completely passed them up in skill. This is why we bumped her up to expert division and traveling far to compete. Her results at the gym is the same, she come from the bottom of the class as a white belt to now one of the top kid in the gym. She is the only kid at the gym that compete every month when there is a tournament. Any boys her size or a little bigger than her have no chance when rolling with her, no matter what belt they are. Her only competition now are the bigger kids that out weighs her by 30-40 lbs. They are so much bigger and stronger that they can withstand her techniques. But yet they can't tap her out either. So they are good partners for her to learn her control. Please don't get me wrong...we both are loving this journey. It has become our lifestyle, there isn't a day that gone by that we don't think about JJ and find ways to take her training to the next level.

nice job with the mission control from body triangle, haven't tried that before. there are a couple of kids i work with that should see this, inspirational.

on what to do with the second no gi match. i can remember feeling like that with people passing my guard. personally i feel like i improved my guard retention and recovery once i drilled a good amount of jailbreaks, butterfly guard and lockdown game. it looked like cora went for the lockdown near the end but didn't do much prior to keep her knees in like in butterfly guard and when mounted before just went for bridge and rolls.

she is doing great things and should be proud. this is definitely about the journey.

Alex: thanks for the advice. We wil be working hard on her guard believe me. Before her final no gi match, I always thought that Cora's guard was very good for kids her size and skill level because she is always able to keep them there. I always tell her that when she have someone in her guard, it has got to lead to a submission and so far that is the case. Until this match, credit to the boy, he knows his stuff as well and with him being so much stronger, he was able to stay out of her guard. She tried hard to fight for the guard, but it wasn't to be. Yes we will work on that even harder now. I have no idea what a lockdown is, but we will be working on that butterfly guard as well. THis is why I love this site, its the friends like you who loves JJ so much and are willing to help a newbie like us. Cora wants to compete on the highest stage possible for kids and with that she is willing to work hard. wow we finally got your attention..:):) First of all I just want to thank you for taking the time to view this thread. And thank you for creating this beautiful system. You are a genious. I really mean it. I'm sure you probably hear this a lot but here it is one more time. Your system fits my daughter's ability so much its like you made it for her. Before kids and coaches always know that she have a killer triangle from the spider guard, but she can only do so much spider guard on them until they figure it out. So one by one they start to build an immunity toward it. I then search all over the internet to find another way for her to succeed in this sport. I always believe that in order to be better than the rest, she have to train harder and be ahead of her peers. So I search and search and found YOU. I found the RUBBER GUARD. I'm no BJJ expert, but I know a great system when I see one. So I search every end of the internet for anything that is related to You and your Rubber Guard. From day one we start working on it.....and by day 5 Cora was able to use the Rubber Guard to set up her killer triangle and won a local tournament. I can go on and on about how this change our game and Cora love for the sport even more, but I won't take much more of your time. All I want you to know is that you will not find any other kid that is rocking your system as hard as Cora and she's only been doing JJ 2 years and playing with the rubber guard for only 7 wks. THe other day, she told me that her 2 fighing idols are Bruce Lee and YOU.....:):) Can you believe that???? I was shocked!!!!

Thats great to hear. Just want to reiterate that Cora is gonna lose before she wins with any technique. It's so awesome you got video of her from the beginning. Seeing the progression and working on mistakes caught from footage is the best.
So the reason why she is losing at top competition is because the guys are much bigger than her. This is the problem you really have to address. The answer comes from the technique. She's doing or not doing certain things. She will learn by reps on the mat and/or getting guidance from us here on the forum, or meeting up with 10p'rs in your local area.
I'll do my best to chime in on where I can. I'm sure the others will as well.
Awesome job again, and tell Cora keep her head up because she's doing well. I wish I had parents like you when I was a young one. They put me in karate. lol!

As has been stated her first match was awesome. Great control and patience. As for her second match, it seemed like it was definitely her half guard game (the lockdown) that could have save her. Multiple times she would get one leg and try and get the other but the kid just came out. If she had good lockdown game she'd easily be able to sweep him and work him from the top, even pulling him back in if she really wanted to do her rubber guard. She's looking awesome though. Can't wait to see more.

Rick: sorry if I mislead you and the gang here, this is Cora's 1st real lost via tap out since her very 1st tournament 6 months ago. Ever since we got the first one out of the way, and yes she got RNC in her very 1st match of her very 1st tournament...LOL But since then she has returned the favor to that boy..:) and then some. Lose first, win later is our training theme, so I truly agree with you on that. She is still getting tap out here and there by the bigger boys in the gym, but that is ok though. Because if they were the same size as her, they won't be able to do that. But they are on our hit list and we will be taking them down one at a time... Every night we go to the gym, it is mandatory that I have my video camera with me. I record all of her sparring matches and when we get home, we watch it to learn what she is doing right and wrong so we can fix it for the next day. I think we changed the culture of the gym because before it was just me and now i see more and more parents recording their kids. And some even apply my bounty system and points/ reward system. I also share with them what i'm doing at home with Cora so they might do it for their kids as well. Hey if their kids get better, they will help Cora get even better.....so its win win. To get to the next level, she need good sparring partners, not ones that she can run over easily.

Looking at her finals matches, we will be working on breaking posture for sure and also guard retention this whole week. I will put her against the big boys all week and see if she improve by the end of this week. I know there are many more aspect to her game that needs improving, but this is the most immediate.

by the way, we started out looking for a karate place to put her in, but when we got there, it looks like we were going to get jumped in the parking lot so we didn't go that route...:) Came home and google bjj, and her current school had posted a vid of a girl tapping out a boy with a triangle. Her eyes glows as she watched the vid. The rest is history. Strange enough that vid was about 4 years old and it took place at the same spot where Cora just compete at....:) Little did I know that in 2 short years she is the one putting on that deadly triangle...:) I'm no special dad, i'm just a dad that wants to spend as much time with his daughter as possible now because in a few years, she will be interested in boy and have more attitude and all that BS that comes along with it...... feel my pain??? not looking forward to those years.

I think your best bet, if you have no one to teach you the moves, would be to buy the Mastering the Rubber Guard DVD and maybe buy the Mastering the Rubber Guard book. Even Jiu-jistu Unleashed would have some stuff, but the first two would be the most comprehensive in print. Lots of good stuff on these.

Yes I just can't wait for her to grow up some more and have more strength to go with her techniques. There are somethings I want to teach her but at the moment, her young weak body can't seem to do it. So I pick and choose only techniques that she is capable of doing. In a few more years when her body grow to match her techniques....the real fun begins....:):)

C.J= Thank you for the vid and Master Eddie, thank you for the beautiful system. I'm still so excited from last night work out and so is Cora. WHY ARE WE SO EXCITED???? you see for 2 years we had a hit list of all the kids that Cora wants to catch up. So far she have passed or caught up all of them except one.....Anthony. The main reason why is because he is so BIG, last weighed in at 107 lbs and Cora is only 62 lbs. But its not just his size, the kids works hard. He practice 6 days a week just like Cora. He is very discipline. He is an orange/green belt in JJ and a green belt in Judo. With all that, that is why Cora hasn't been able to catch up with him no matter how hard she trains. Sure she can tap him out once in a blue moon when she is on her game, but most of the time he just power his way pass her guard, land in side control and use his weights to sink in his favorite move, the Americana or Kimura. Even though Cora usually defend it pretty good, but when the weights wore her down, its a tap out. UNTIL last night......

I want to thank you guys for the LOCKDOWN.... after watching the vids you guys provide on the lockdown, we spent an hour last night working on it before going to the gym. And this is the result....NO TAP OUT....:):) And she was able to prevent him from passing her guard completely. ANd for the 1st time I see him get frustrated that he can't pass her guard at will. Thanks guys for all the advice and vids, they are great. The problem I'm having now is deciding which techniques to tackle first so that she can be prepare for Kids Pan Am this Feb. So far when she lose a match, its because the kid is more experience and caught her with something we never touched on before. 3 months ago during her gold medal match, before the rubber guard, the kid pass her guard while she tried to triangle him and all he did was secure his north south control and stall. Because he didn't want to get back in her guard. We didn't know how to get him off and he won that way. But when we got home, guess what I search for on youtube, North south escape. The last tournament could have a better result if we would have known the lockdown. With so many techniques out there, I just don't have enough time to cover them all because we are competing every single month thus far. But at the same time, she is always improving with every tournament. I guess that is part of the sport huh? YOu should have seen her six months ago, before the bounty system, before the 2 hours of training everyday, before 10thplanetjj. Its night and day now....:):) It only takes 6 months of focus to change her game. Can't wait to see what the next 6 months will be like, especailly with the help of 10thplanetier...:):) That's my name for yall....
