My story about how I know about 10pjj. In 2003 thx to Mr youtube I come across Master Eddie vs Royler Gracie video. Since that day I want to learn his stuff I dont know anything about Jiu jitsu never been to JJ school can not find school that teach his style so I move on, Xmas come I got presents from SANTA forgot what year it was either 05,06 got Mastering the ruber guard 3 set dvd watch it millions time no one to practice with forgot about it. August 2012 search on Facebook found Brandon and Tyler woolsey 10th planet jj HB fort lauderdale best day ever, one month later compete at NAGA lost by point, sec month compete at FXG lost by point, go to Coach ZOG seminar awesome!. So share your story how you come across 10th planet JJ thank you.

My brother wanted to do mma so I wanted to learn some things so I could corner him. He showed me 10th Planet and I was hooked because it was soo unorthodox and Ive always wanted to do jiu jitsu. I have no jiu jitsu schools here but I studied the system like a mid term. I joined the Nibiru forum (to have access to the MTS videos), got MTR dvd, The 10th Planet all stars dvd, started asking questions and always got a reply haha. I soon realized I made the right choice to align with 10th planet. Its a family. Like when Gem was in the bad car wreck everyone pulled together to help him out. Then Jon Helton's soldier of a son Davis needed help with his medical condition everyone helped out. Now Conor needs our help and everyone is pulling together. Family is what keeps me here besides the fact everyone in the system is ego free and open minded. I had very few people to roll with when I started but I got my reps in, first in my mind then on the mat. I trained off and on but still studied the terminology every single day. 2 years later my homie opened up a mma program at a local boxing gym here and he has gracie barra guys teaching jiu jitsu so now I have real jiu jitsu guys to train with and I got to attend Eddies seminar over at 10th Planet sherman where he promoted me to blue belt. I got to be at a 10th planet school, train with Eddie, and get promoted all in the same weekend. 3 dreams came:cool: true! Your lucky you get to train with B-Dub and Tyler The Terror! They know there stuff!

Around 2005 or 06 I was training at a local gym where jj was kinda looked down on, hence I got a lot of time in with the instructor. He then moved and I needed to find a way to keep learning. Found submissions 101 and mastering the rubber guard, seen some videos on torrent so I bought the dvd mastering the twister. Later attended a seminar by scott epstein and one of the attendees looked like the guy from submissions 101 (it was Ari!!) 10th planet opened a few months later in victoria so I would make the drive once a week to train.

Have since moved but continue to train in the basement with my sons and neice, still active in competition and was promoted to blue online by Ari over the summer.

I heard about Eddie back in the day when many of us midwest wrestlers thought he was just some jaggoff Cali BJJ guy that had renamed the Guillotine/Abdominal Stretch so that he could claim he invented something new ;)

But his name really wasn't on my radar at all until the Royler win.

I ended up buying all of Eddies books, starting with Jiu-Jitsu Unleashed in '05. I thought "hmmm... I'm a small, flexible Mexican with a fantastic goatee.... maybe I too can make this stuff work!"

And I did.

I got a lot of milage out of some very basic Rubber Guard, mostly using it as an Omoplata/Gogoplata setup. Twister Side and the Truck came naturally to me. I had already been using the Lockdown for years, but picked up some new tricks from there too. And I really apreciated the focus on no gi.

Oddly, I didn't actually get to a 10th Planet gym until last year. I stumbeled accross Josh and the Chicago North crew via a totally random internet search. I was actually kinda ticked that I hadn't known about the school earlier. I had even seen some of the guys at NAGA events, but I had thought they were all out of towners (nearest school I had known about was Indy). Anyhow, I called Josh, didn't bother to leave a message, but he called me right back anyhow. We talked for a bit and I asked if I could come check the place out the next time I was on the north side...

The rest is history.

My fellow training partner and one of our coaches were big 10th planet supporters and showed me lockdown to help me with my half guard. After realizing the control one has with the lockdown. I realized there were other high level instructors other than the Gracies and their black belts. I then went to college and started training with Neale Hoerle from ex 10th planet Morgantown and he has been so helpfull and encouraging for my interest in 10th planet showing me different variations of techniques Eddie has implemented. 10th planet for me is just another way of looking at BJJ so why not learn everything soak in as much BJJ as possible, even though i still train in the GI as well as NO-Gi.

saw someone(cant even remember who) go to mission control in mma. First thing found searching the web was abu dhabi 03. When I got older, he became fatter and I became stronger, I started to win, and then he started to work out and lose weight. While I was away in Canada he started messing around with stretching, and lockdown, and the beginnings of Rubber Guard. At the time we were just messing around and he would just shit on me with his lockdown, whip up, old skool, and electric chair. As I would come and go for hockey season, he would continue repping the stuff behind my back and I would still come in as Macho as ever and try and rough him up. Many Rug Burns, Blood Stained Carpet, Backyard Headlocks, and SHITTY TECHNIQUE, brought us to the one guy who fucked with the 10th Planet System in Chicago… Josh Passini. From there my dad had done like 3 or 4 private lessons without me, and then I would end up going just to be his grappling partner, with little to no enthusiasm. About 2 months into private lessons Josh had invited us to come to his class and become full-fledged members of the Gym, apprehensive as hell, “I was like fuck that I’m not gonna go and get shit on by some random people” (At first I was that guy). After going my first class, and not getting killed, getting instruction from everyone at the gym, I started to warm up to Jiu Jitsu, I started to embrace the 10TH Planet Family. I started to realize that this wasn’t just a pastime, hobby, or some martial art, it was more than that. It was a clubhouse, a sweatbox, a house of pain, bumps and bruises, but the guys next to you all felt the same way. From there I was humbled, Broken Down and reborn a Nibiru Warrior.

Side-note. Josh has been there like a brother for me through tough times and good times, he has pushed me to be my greatest, and picked me up when I’m my worst. He’s been more than a coach, more than a instructor, and more than a mentor. Josh is family, and for that I’m eternally grateful. So Josh Thank You For Everything!

you guys probably heard it before but here's how I came across the system:

When I first started jits(Jokers Wild Fighting Academy) I was like a sponge trying to learn all that I could.
Someone dropped an invisible collar on me, I was like that was cool.
Another friend told me about butterfly and rubberguard and lockdown. I was like what the heck is all that.
They said, just buy the Rubber Guard book. I resisted and bought, Jiu Jitsu Unleashed by Eddie, instead.
Enthused that all this ish was working, I bought the Rubber Guard book, and for my first tourney I was going to drop RG on people.
I go to gracie nationals and face one of Eddie's guys, Dave Calahan. I was like, yes!!! I'm gonna pull RG on the originators student. I lost, but made a friend in DC, gained respect for the system.

Moved to Nor Cal bay area and was going to visit and join 10p SF under Denny, but I first wanted to try something closer to where I was living. I immediately clicked with FSA in South SF. Good people and I didn't want to leave them to go to Denny's, although I knew Denny's was the place to be.

Moved back to so cal, riverside. Continued my training with Munoz and Joker but being out of work, the 100 mile round trip was proving to be costly, so I googled jiu jitsu riverside...
results showed: 10th Planet Riverside...

I thought it was a typo or mistake, so I went to visit the place(about 5 minutes from home)...
This was in july 2009. I liked it and said I'll be back. Still tried to make the trek to my gym in OC with Joker or Munoz, but realized, 10p riverside made much more sense.
The rest is history... Now we got a gym in OC. It's my way of saying I believe in the system, and I'm gonna spread the word.

All the time before 10th Planet I was trying to justify why I hadn't joined, or was trying to beat a 10P guy in tourney... It was all time wasted, because fate brought me into the system, and it's the coolest bunch of people you can find, world wide!

I see there are a lot of people that look down on the system or talk shit, secretly, but in the end, when you put them behind closed doors and show them what it's really about, they'll be honest as f*** and are really down with it too.

sometime around 2004-5 I saw a video of Eddie in an interview saying how the lockdown is the most powerful way to play halfguard. Tried it and have been hooked eversince. Not even sure it was 10th planet then.

My story:
I heard of this dude Eddie Bravo from the internet in the early stages of my training. I saw this sick system frst hand when I was training at the same camp as my boy Mikey. He completely beat my ass, put me in a gogo and all i could think was how the fuck did his foot get under neath my neck from that position. Being a lifelong wrestler I faired well even with little training but I got fucked up by the shit in this system. Mikey showed me the lockdown and then that shit was on. After that I was on a quest for knowledge and somewhere along that journey i relized that this system fills a lot of the holes that I saw. I was sold but pissed that only Mike and I were messing with it and was told that all that this shit doesnt work. I saw mike find success with a bunch of the system and it came natural to me due to the similiarites to my wrestling game, but I had the worst flexibilty in the game. I stretched, repped and repped and repped and finally saw that Eddie was going to be in Omaha. I left after work late and drove all night to get there(10.5 hours) on time. No sleep but i didnt give a fuck. Eddie asked if anyone was from out of town, a bunch raised our hands. He then asked each of us how far and I told him 10.5 hours overnight. He said where are you from and replied Chicago, he said damn I wish I had a school in Chicago . I quickly replied that's why I'm here and said Im the dude that has been blowing up you email. His response was Oh Shit that's you, and that's when my journey got real. We stayed a bit after and I hung out with Brian from Springfield(Probably the dude that has helped me the most in my Journey, that's my killer!) and I started to realize how awesome and deep this system really is. I can honestly say that the universe has brought me to this awesome family and I am a much better person since diving deeper and deeper into te system. I have gained and amazing amount of fmily memebers from 10p. Im honored to be here and even more honored that Eddie trusted in this crazy Italian kid from Chicago who had the balls and the determination to open up shop in a major market dominanted by Brazilians. 10P4L!!!!

It's so crazy reading all these stories, I am so lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful people, the 10p family is all love :-)

I knew Eddie as the guy who called the early UFC fights correctly and from joe rogan talking about him so when I decided to start jiu jitsu I bought his books and started repping with my friends in my garage. Now I have a few NAGAs, seminars and with the help of Josh Passini a HotBox. That's how 10 do!

I have only been doing jiu jitsu around 20 months now. But found out about Eddie/10p pretty early on. About 6 months into my JJ journey I guess (about 14 months ago).
Anyway, to be truthful It was a video made by Chris Herzog (his Japanese necktie tech vid) that led me to submissions 101 and then Eddie etc.

As soon as I started playing with rubber guard and lockdown etc I knew the system was for me. But as I listened more to Eddie and the guys in the community, the ideas, the way jiujitsu is treated like a science here. It just all made sense.

Even though I cant train regularly at a moon as the nearest is nearly 300 miles away from me, I am lucky enough to train at a decent school where everyone is pretty 10p friendly. My instructor, a Brazilian guy called Valmyr Neto has never once said 'dont do that Eddie Bravo shit in here' or anything like some of the stories we have heard. Plus I have a few really cool training partners that have been dedicating 5+ hours a week since xmas just to help me drill 10th planet tech outside of all my regular classes. That's what 10th planet and jiu jitsu does. Brings people together. :-)

Jiu jitsu weeds out the bad. It either weeds out the bad 'people' very quickly, or it weeds out the bad 'in people'. It can completely transform someone for the better.
You see it happen all the time. Guy comes in, thuggish type, wants to learn MMA and kick some heads in anywhere anytime, 6 months later they are jiu jitsu heads, cleaned up their shit and totally calmed down, just completely different people. Much much better human beings. :-)

I found out about Eddie after the Royler win from my brother who was already training Jiu Jitsu, JKD etc. I grew up in boxing and martial arts and loved the UFC since day 1 in 94 (I think). As some have said Rogan was plugging away more and more about Eddie, so I did some research on him, but due to my lifestyle I was living in Chicago, Orlando & Miami and traveling almost every weekend so I was unable to find just an hour to train. Eventually 10 months ago I restructured my life style and looked up to see if there was a 10th Planet in Chicago and I found Josh. I set up some privates and we all know this world is small, Josh and I used to work at the same club, know all the same people, and his uncle used to train with my brother. So Josh became a close friend right away. I feel in love with the system and how I always say that Eddie is the Bruce Lee of Jits and Josh Passani is such a passionate and great instructor! Eddie, 10th Planet Chicago North & Josh Passani has changed my life and my brother has also feel back in love with Jits and 10th Planet system.

I started with Judo and TKD in Memphis in 2005 and stayed with them until 2007 when I took a break to finish Nursing school. I had some pretty decent pins from the judo, but aside from kata gatame/ arm triangle I had 0 in the way of submissions. Fast forward to August 2010 and I've finally got the funds to get back into judo, and within one month I end up dislocating my left shoulder which ended up requiring surgery. During the downtime from the mats, I was browsing Barnes and Noble one day looking for a book to supplement my now more or less non-existent ground game. First book I picked up was Mastering the Rubber Guard. Cracked it open and the first technique I saw was Half and Half from dogfight. Everything was so well laid out and explained so well that I picked the book up then and there. Soon after I joined up with my current gym and have been a Nibiru warrior ever since. 10P4L :cool:

My story of how I found 10thplanet. We put Cora in BJJ for 2 years now and by the 1st year, she wasn't improving much at all. How can any kids learn anything 1 hour a day, 2 hours a week? So I got tired of seeing her get smashed by a more experience kid. I decided to be more involved and take a more proactive role in her training. So beginning of last summer, I look for anything and everything that was unique in BJJ. I found too many and studied it but decided that at this point in time, Cora is not ready for any of those moves as her body is not to that point where she can do any of those things. So I seach even more, but then I remember watching PRIDE and there was a guy by the name of Shiya Aioki (spell?) he was ripping bigger guys arm off. And I can remember the announcer, can't remember who it was, maybe Bas Rutten , but anyways he always member Shiya Aioki and his rubber guard. I remember when he put on his rubber guard, it was the beginning of the end. I didn't see anybody come out of it. So I reseach more and more on this rubber guard, thinking that Shiya Aioki was the one who created it...:) THen one day while watching MMAinsider with Bas and Kenny, there was EDDIE. Catching the show midway, I didn't know who Eddie was, but I know he wasn't an MMA fighter as I follow UFC and Pride and Strikeforce. So not knowing who he was, I just pay attention to the other guests. Then Bas ask Eddie something along this line " if someone that is not flexible come into your gym, will you be able to teach him the rubber guard?" THen something click for me, Eddie is the guy I should be googling or youtubing for. I popped the laptop out and search...sure enough there were a dozen videos out on the rubber guard. Still not convinced about how to use it for Cora, I search further for anything related to the rubber guard and eddie bravo. I found many tournament vid of people using the rubber guard to great success, especially one from Mr. 300. This vid seal the deal for us as I saw Denny get taken down and right away he put that rubber guard on and that other guy didn't get out of it. So seaching further, I found 10thplanetJJ.com the place where it all started. Now when a parent ask how Cora know so many crazy moves? I just told them 10thplanetJJ.

sneakergus: yes you are truly correct brother...to me Master Eddie is the Bruce Lee of Jits.

I started doing Jiu jitsu in January 2000 under a Rickson Gracie lackbelt. I was a 100% gi guy. I heard about Eddie and his win over Royler in 2003 but when I heard he was all about no Gi I quickly lost interest. Fast forward to 2009. I was 41 years old and recently divorced. I was always interested in doing mma but my ex wife hated Jiu Jitsu so mma was out of the question. But now I was single so I told my coach I wanted to do a few mma fights. He asked me why do I want to do that at my age and I told him because didnt want to wake up one day at 61 and say I wish I would have. He seemed to reluctantly agree and told me I needed to start going to the mma classes. Now remember I trained only in the gi for 9 years. I started going to the mma classes and got a rude awakening. A lot of the guys I was teaching and tapping out in the Jiu jitsu classes we doing much better against me in the mma classes and a few were killing me. I felt like a white belt all over again.One guy "Jason" caught me in invisible collar two times in a row. I asked him what he did and he said it was part of Eddie Bravos Rubber guard called invisible collar. I had heard of it but I was always told not to wast my time with it. However now a white belt that i was teaching gi Jiu jitsu too just tapped me twice with it so I went out and bought mastering the rubber guard and mastering the twister that night. As I read the intros to the books I was blown away. I keep thinking this Eddie Bravo guy is sooooo correct. I was feeling in the mma classes exactly what he was talking about how the set ups for gi and no gi are completly different. A triangle is a triangle but how you set it up in gi and no gi is different. I felt like a white belt for the first time in a long time. My game slowly begain to change as I added more and more 10th Panet to game and the rest is history. I think if I never decided to do mma I would probably still be wearing a gi lol

Without getting too wordy as I'm know to do, I'll keep it simple.

Royce Gracie showed the effectiveness of GJJ. I fell in love with it. Then vale tudo/NHB started to evolve into MMA. BJJ guys were starting to lose and I lost interest in BJJ because nobody was really trying anything new. Then I remembered some debate on the old ADCC forums about rubber guard and Eddie Bravo. So I wondered, hey, I wonder what's going on with that guy's system these days? Found this video:

Saw some wild ish that I ain't never seen before (the truch) and got that BJJ fire reignited in me. It seemed that BJJ had been evolving while I stopped paying attention and 10th Planet was at the forefront of that evolution.

So I then I found 10thplanetjj.com. Posted for about a year, I think. Then I joined up with 10th planet Roc and it's been on since then. Addicted ever since. I literally go to bed thinking of rolling and going through reps in my head. And 10th planet BJJ, in addition to an amazing coach and awesome team mates, has made me a better man and improved my quality of life.

Purchased Eddies first book then while on vacation took his class back during the Bomb Squad days. It was the first time I ever met one of my idols. Eddie was awesome!

Oh wait, I still gave the long version. The short version is that I've been a forum nerd for more than a decade. I used to frequent the ADCC forums (I don't think they exist anymore). I've always been more interested in no gi than gi. Anyhow, I heard of 10th planet pretty much when Eddie started it because the hate was all over the internet. I asked what the heck 10th planet was and some guy showed me a picture of the now defunct London position. Like a year or two later Dean Lister triangled a guy using RG/london as the set up. So rubber guard has always intrigued me because it's been proven to be effective. I just didn't know there was a whole system to it. I just didn't get mind blown until I saw the truck in the above video. And when I saw the lockdown series, I was officially committed to the idea of learning this stuff.

Dammit, I can't seem to keep a story short no matter how hard I try. SMH.

Just read through the whole thread. Totally worth reading. Lots of awesome stories man.

lol @ David: bro when I first read your story, I was like "there's no way in hell he can keep it short"...lol you see I find that when I am telling a story of something I love and passionate about, its never short. If I make it short, I'm not doing it justice. You know what I mean bro? Its like me telling yall about how I fall in love with my wife... its just can't be short...:)

Ha, yeah, good point. I know I'm only a white belt, but my passion for BJJ runs deep. I started later in life, but at least I started. And now that I started, I"m in this for life. Jiu jitsu is one of the pieces of my life that has made me the happiest I've ever been. Without it I'd still be happy...but I know I wouldn't be AS happy. It's almost like my 2nd religion. I'm always trying to convert new believers and I'm always eager to talk about it. Hahaha.
