Tuesday after work im going to be joining 10th planet coquitlam under Nabil Salameh . and muay thai under Ken Tran. Im just wondering what to expect and whats some good protocols i should follow when starting my first class?I dont want to get in the way of anyone as im a white belt. any input would be GREATLY appreciated THANKS GUYS!!
Be humble, be yourself, & don't have an ego. It's ok to tap. Everything else will take care of itself:cool:

Everything will be explained to you, don’t stress it or worry about trying too hard. Really, you don’t need to learn anything in or to go in and learn something. Tap early and go there to learn is solid advised though :)
clip your nails, don't flail, wear a cup or expect to get your junk accidentally crushed on occasion. Talking between rolls cuts down on your partner's training time, just try to absorb what they catch you with. Don't stank. 10Ppl that I've met have all been uber cool so no worries yo
Take it slow and easy, baby steps is key. Don't spar until you are 100% comfortable moving on the ground. Just soak up as much knowledge as you can and have fun. It will all start to make sense at the 3 month mark :-)

I was pretty much gonna say all of this. I'd say talking too much with another white belt isn't the best idea. But talking to the higher belts could be helpful (in my opinion). Then again, I think NY'ers (even from upstate) are natural talkers. I remember the little nuggets that Sarkis and Scott Yockel would give me were always great...sometimes even mid roll. Hell, some of the mid roll banter in the gym would be laugh out loud hilarious.Quote:

Definitely focus the paths you've been taught in class. I spent 6 months trying the cool stuff I watched on youtube. Sometimes I'd succeed. Most times I'd fail. But the moment I started focusing strictly on what I learned in class, my success rate improved dramatically. Trust your instructor.
And more than anything, do not get discouraged. With the wrong mindset, it can get very discouraging when you only get tapped. Just remember that every tap is a lesson. So take it as a lesson and not a failure. Focus first on avoiding your mistakes. Count every small victory. One guy taps you 5 times in 5 minutes? Make it your goal to not get tapped as much. Another guy passes your guard like butter? Make it your goal to hold guard a bit longer. Small victories help morale and keep your head in the game. Then one day, voila, you'll get your first tap, the pieces start coming together...and you'll have other white belts to beat up on eventually. :)

Just have fun ! Both Nabil and Ken are great guys and experienced ! I havent been to their gym yet , but I have known them for a few years now and I know their training ethics . You will be in great hands
