Just curious how many wear a cup on the regular.
Never, hate them!
Yeah, I've never worn one. I've also had my beanbag smashed to oblivion so was just curious.
boxer briefs, jock strap with cup in it, compression shorts on top(often with tights on top of that). Its doesnt move. Science.
I don't. They are banned form most tournaments now a days, so you may as well get used to not having one.
I agree with Drew, cup jock strap, compression shorts and then either spats or shorts. Can't go wrong. I've heard some arguments that not wearing a cup makes your guard better I just don't believe it and like to look after my nuts
i never roll without them. what that cup protects is one of the only things i value more than jiu jitsu :)
not to mention the fact that if i didnt keep that anaconda locked up, id kill people instead of make them uncomfortable.
I've thought long and hard about this. While in a self defense situation you would not be wearing a cup so it might be good to practice without one; however, in competition it seems they are required by Rule (by at least NAGA and MMA) so practicing in what you compete in would be a good idea IMO.
I've never worn one, basically because I couldn't decide what to buy or what would be easy to use.
Had a few close calls recently with the sergeant and his troops that have seriously made me reconsider this choice.
Never, only when I have to for MMA bouts.
Never roll without one, hate when I have to compete without one. Feel nervous when my nuts aren't protected. I use the diamond mma cup and it's awesome, my training partners complain that it can be a bit painful for them when I get their back so I don't hip in from there. I understand why they ban them from some comps, it just makes me queezy personally
I only use one for mma days at my gym. I hate wearing one so bought the smallest one that I could physically cram my shit into lol. I would never tell anyone not to wear one but it does suck when someone goes for an armbar on me and theyre wearing a cup. The extra fulcrum has tweaked my elbows numerous times.
I don't wear one during while karate sparring, do wear one during jiujitsu since i kept getting balls smashed when I got knee sliced passed
jock strap with steel thai cup covered by compression shorts every training session. Has kept me pain free of knee slices and nutt kicks for a couple years now. If im gonna compete wearing it then I might as well train wearing it. I try to do as much as possible with a mouth piece in 2 so it doenst mess with my head if im tired or something
Always wear one unless its not allowed, you can never really get used to getting knees or elbows to the groin...full on kicks accidental or not hurt much more without the protection
Thai steel cup, super cheap, nearly indestructible, hurts whoever hits me while I feel nothing, makes my junk look bigger. It's an all around win.
I use to only wear cups with spats, so that my dong piece wasn't just chillin in peoples faces. Now I just wear shorts over my spats. I actually find the cup super uncomfortable, and usually if you get your nuts hit during rolling, it was your own fault it happened. Either way, i live a cupless life.
I wear it almost all the time. I ain't tryin to get my biz smashed up and twisted.
Gotta protect the McNuggets
If you do more than just jiujitsu, meaning takedowns, kickboxing, any of it.. You need a cup. Barncat and I have an agreement at 10th planet Beaumont, if someone shows up without a cup, he's repping knee slice passes in jiujitsu and inside leg kicks in my kickboxing class! Lol. It's protective equipment. You may no like it, but its there for a reason.. Plus it's our gym rules.. Don't like it? There's a Gracie barra down the street..
I see your cup and mouthpiece like I see a seatbelt. 99.99% of the time you don't need it. But that 0.01% spit second you do need it, it's the most important thing in the world at that moment. I wear my seatbelt.. Just sayin.
I like to make things as awkward as possible for all parties involved.
Your first week of class it may be awkward or "gross" having something bulging and hard on your partner down there (cup). Later on tho, the soft squishy down there grosses me out. I know it was your junk and not a cup.. Yuck. I hate visiting gyms that are no cups. It's so gross... And the whole time they bitch about my cup smashing into their back.. Every time I get a complaint about my cup digging in someone's back, I reply with " I'm not wearing a cup" as I wink at them..
All I wear is one of those purple Crown Royal sacks with the draw string...and nothing else (no shorts, no shirt, etc.). Doesn't provide much protection, but it looks super awesome!
This is from the NAGA No-Gi Rules pdf http://www.nagafighter.com/pdf/2013_naga_rules.pdf on their website. The only reason I checked is because I was considering it as a Tournament series to try out for my competition and always check Rules before entering.
-At a minimum, a groin protector (male competitors), mouthpiece, and shorts with a drawstring must be worn. Because fingers and toes can get caught and injured, no pockets or zippers are allowed on the shorts.
Regardless, I like to train in what I am planning to compete in, including mouthguard and clothes. That way there is no surprises or discomfort on competition day.
Wow lots of different view on this subject. As yall know Cora competes and trains just as much as anyone on here and to this date she has never smash anyone's nutts. The knee slice is one of her best guard pass. On the other side, she was also a victim of an armbar gone wrong. The boy didnt have an armbar but decided to use his huge cup to smash her forearm anyways. This took her out of the game for almost 3 weeks. Depending on what kind of a person you are, a cup can be use as a sheild or as a weapon. You know how easy would be if Cora has a cup on and triangle someone?
Jock strap w/ cup, compressions shorts (spats and/or shorts), always. JJ, MMA, or just training.
balls are too big, should I upload a pic of them sitting in/on a shock doctor? Imagine two scoops of vanilla ice cream sitting on a japanese soup spoon.
I wear a groin protector for some striking.
I almost always train with a cup. Boxer briefs, jock w/ cup, compression shorts, and spats.
If I'm getting ready for an ibjjf rules comp or something I will train without it starting a week or two out, though.
iNITIALLY I didn't wear one (because I hadn't found one that fit yet) and then one day got knee slice passed and also had someone almost awkwardly land near the groin so I went out that next day and ordered a Shock Doctor cup online. Since then I've purchased 2 more and those are the brands I wear, I've never had anyone complain that my cup was the reason they tapped (I also have almost never had it be the reason I tap, in the few cases I could feel the cup against my arm or neck the lock was just about sank in anyways and it was going to be a tap cup or not). I treat cups the same way I treat seat belts, helmets, condoms, etc.
All things being equal you should use them, they may be uncomfortable at times but in that moment when you need them you'll be glad (I've had a couple kicks in TKD come near me, and in rolling too someone blatantly land near my crotch and thanks to the Cup I was able to continue going like nothing happened).
Never Never
Never thought this thread would go for this long. I've never really noticed many people I've ever rolled with wearing one; including myself. Perhaps I should give this some more thought. Better safe than sterile!
Most people in our gym don't wear them. Also...wow, how mean to knee slice and grind on people's nuts for not wearing a cup. I've knee sliced many a man and never messed their junk up. Also, if you do jj...lady or man, you should be comfortable with the others person's body. If you roll with me, your body is my body. I'll use different parts of you as handles and etc. So what if you accidentally have an encounter. Just keep going. Idk how many accidental and unnoticed boob grabs have happened to me...I don't wear 6 bras bc of it. Everyone in the gym is family. We are one...so get used to other people's bodies...or maybe this isn't your sport.
Someone not wearing a cup isn't gross. Someone wearing dirty gear is gross. Someone having pieces of Sheetrock in their hair mixed with gel is gross. Someone not wearing deodorant...gross! A lady not keeping her lady funk under control....gross...
I have had to abandon triangles/armbars because of self inflicted attempt at castration. Like if someone gets their other hand in on a triangle. I'm sure I could still finish, if it wasn't for the fact that my small, but sensitive, testicles are cornered with nowhere to run.
you got them larry david long balls, huh?
never wore a cup until one of the dudes, that is around 200, tried jumping over my legs in my guard, was stopped by my legs, and landed with his hip right on my balls. holy fuck did it hurt. haven't gone cupless since.
I always did for mma training but I was told not to by the first ever guy I rolled with at BJJ practice. I've never had any problems without one and don't care if someone wants to wear one, but I really hate tapping to triangles because someone is pulling my head and smashing my jaw into his steel cup.
No one wants your balls in their face. Wear a cup.
