Grappling dummies

So I've heard conflicting opinions on the subject of training dummies. I'm curious what you guys think. I've owned a submission master for a while now but have just recently started using it. I couldn't get with the feel at first. It was difficult to work with but I've recently been told it needs to be broken in. There are a lot of things that you can't do with it, but there's a whole bunch of stuff opening up to me now that I can train with it. What are other peoples opinions, suggestions. What does Master Eddie think? Waste of time or valuable training tool? Thanks in advance.

To be honest, I've been thinking the same thing. It's quite hard to find training partners who are willing to drill the same move one thousand times, maybe more. If anyone has any experience with dummies, please share :D

grappling dummies are awesome. i love mine, i roll out of bed, break his arm for a while pressure him with KOB and then go get breakfast.

You are in an advantageous position being a rubber guard practitioner. Generally they are useless for BJJ guys who train to lock on arm bars / triangles / kimuras against people who posture. However, the style that Eddie Bravo calls for means clinching someone and minimising space. I've found that mine is fantastic for working my rubber guard - it has REALLY helped my develop my rubber guard movements, e.g. my invisible collar and my dead orchard I drilled 100 times each on the dummy and tapped an opponent with them in sparring (without ever having done them with a live person - I'm not from a 10th planet school, I'm self taught in that style).

Turtle and back they are good.

Side Control, Half Guard, etc they are useless.

Know their advantages / limitations before you buy and they can be a great acquisition :)

For $600 I could pay a hooker to fight me off until I'm a BB. Man are those things expensive!

I think my submission master was extremely helpful during my formative training years, but once I started teaching morning classes which basically meant training twice a day, I lost use for it and sold it. Now that I have had to take time off, I wish every once in a while that I had it again. I wouldn't say it was completely useless for some half guard variations like 93 guard and Z guard, but it wasn't exactly ideal for lockdown though I did put it in lockdown a few times to play with some ideas.

I have the Pro boxing equipment one (they manufacturer the dummies submission master is selling). They gave me a good deal and I got it for 400$ shipped. The owner at Pro Boxing equipment said the dummy's name is "Raul" So it stuck haha. I use it for rubberguard alot and for my mount work. I really bought it for my transitions to spiderweb like from the mount and the back. I use it for halfguard just fine. I mean he doesnt catch himself but Old Schools and Electric chairs are easy for me. I can get to the vaporizer also. I can hit twister rolls & samurais easy but the legs will bend all jacked up not the way a human leg would bend. So I've been trying to figure out a way to fix it. I use it for solo drills and for when Im showing someone a technique one on one. Its stuffed with shredded fabric so when it "Breaks In" its basically just softening up the fabric. The elastic cord gets in the way sometimes but its only because I dont hava GI:cool::p All in all, it is money well spent for me as no one here will let me hit em with the croc over and over and over. Just my 2 cents

I made my own grappling dummy, his name is Bob II, and according to my girlfriend I spend more time with him than I do with her.

So what's the best one?

I have a submission master that I use occasionally. When I work out at home I always include drills on him in between sets, makes for a nice diverse work out.

Thinking about this one but he stopped producing them for a couple monthes to make an improved design or something. Im gonna message him to see if he is making them again because they are cheaper than the usual grappling dummy and looks good for truck and berimbolo transitions

Two above look rather poor to me, mate. Ring 2 Cage one I have seems better (more weight to it, more human-like)

I have a Pro Boxing Grappling dummy.... I find it pretty useful, Once you beat it up a little it's pretty fun.

Plus moving the dead weight around over and over gets a little sweat going its about 75 pounds.

You can work a lot of guard on it.

Just looked that up. Looks pretty good. Not super worried about the weight, mostly just need to practice the movements of stuff. I like the realalistic-ish feet and legs shape so I can do truck, berimbolo, or leg lock stuff. Wonder how much work it is to fill it yourself for the cheaper price

Um, in my experience they don't really help much with technique, but are good for isometric submission holds ie Kimuras, RNC. But there are better ways to train that without spending $400+.

I'm using mine regularly recently. I think it will be helpful for a lot of stuff. Practiced a lot of standing M1's today, along with a couple other passes. I think it will be as useful as I make it. I'm not sure yet if it's worth the money. I have the pro-boxing submission master as well. I can definitely say, it's made well and very durable. It isn't the real thing, but I think it will be useful for some stuff. I'll keep everyone updated as I come up with better uses for it. It's definitely good for practicing things like rubber guard, just to memorize the paths.

I built my own using pvc pipe frame with 8-10 lengths of wire running thru the frame so it can take many positions. The pvc is then covered with pool noodles cut parrallel and then some rags and tape plus what ever clothes or old Gis I could find. Is fantastic for drilling 100 darce's or 100 kneeride spin armbars etc that training partners dont always have time for, or the extra drills you can do outside of class, even positional stuff. It has already had arm surgery after some over zealous rolling armbars and is due some acl surgery thanks to the leg locks and electric chairs ... Still cost next to nothing and doesn't mat tap :)

I also recommend making your own Dummy.
My original 'Jeffy' (because he looks retarded and likes apples) recently finally fell apart.
I'm in the process of building his replacement.

I use empty plastic bottles as the framework for the body filled with old clothes and held together by fabric tape (lots of fabric tape).
You'll be amazed how well you can articulate it, Jeffy even had an ankle joint to get the correct positioning on heel hooks.

You feel silly at first but I'm at the point now where I could spend an ungodly amount on something that won't do what I can build for less than $100.

I am in the market for a Grappling Dummy. Since our club stared also training in the Gi, I basically want it for repping out collar chokes and setups, etc. I can't see any pictures in this thread here at work, if there are any, but I wanted to canvas you guys and see what is the best out there.

I know this is an older thread. But I have been looking into grappling dummies for the same reason a lot of you are. Drilling, lack of willing partners, and time. So I just bite the bullet on the Max dummy. I'll let you know how it goes.

I bought the Pro Boxing one awhile back. It has been great for figuring out stuff I see on MTS and Youtube videos. Excellent for rubberguard and helps build up you clinch and leg curl strength/endurance. I’m trying to figure out how to make it heavier than 75#.

I filled up a blow up doll (the sex kind) w/ bean bag beans, duct taped it up, threw an old gi on It, and voi la! $75.

Grappling dummies cost a lot so get friends and mats, wrestling on carpets is really really shitty
