At what age did you start doing martial arts?
I ask because I'm very interested in doing martial namely BJJ, Judo and Sambo, but my mother won't allow me. She thinks I will get hurt, even though I've wrestled my freshmen year of high school (I'm a senior now and planning to start wrestling again).
What should I do?
If I start doing martial arts in my twenties will I be able to keep up with those who have done BJJ and Judo since childhood?
I didn't start seriously pursuing grappling until I was almost 26.

I started at 16 after having played football (soccer) and running cross country as a youngster.
Do it now..sneak out to do it, start when you're 13 years old...we all wish we were younger man, trust me when I say to start now. I've watched BJJ happen around me for years before I jumped in. I started at 19. Wish I had stated at 13

the answer depends upon what you mean by "keep up with"
If you mean be competitive against the best internationally then absolutely not and completely out of the question in an Olympic sport like Judo.
Perhaps you can better define what level you are talking about.

TKD @ 10, Shotokan @ 16, Pro-wrestling(work & shoot) @ 25, 10PJJ @ 40 :) I personally think karate styles at a very early age are excellent for balance, agility, & flexibility.
Bjj was my first martial art and I started at 20. You basically have 2 options: either train or don't. You may not be able to keep up with certain people, but who knows...you may. You can for sure become the best grappler you can be though, regardless of age. Can't go back in time, only forward and work with what you have.

work your butt off no matter what age and you'll be where the people that work their butts off are.
He started BJJ at that age but didn't he already do capoeira before that?

I'm 41 now and after two years of BJJ I can keep up just fine with guys half my age or less, obviously depending on skill level.

In my lifetime I have dabbled in a bunch of Martial Arts, but nothing worth noting as far as ranking purposes go. TKD was the only art I got into Blackbelt ranks with. (So far)
If the day comes that you are ever going to need BJJ to defend yourself, chances are you are going to get hurt worse by not knowing it than you ever will by learning it in a controlled environment. You will be able to thank your mother for that, if it ever happens.Quote:

Started jiujitsu halfway through 22, now I'm about a month away from 25.
I'd just turned 28 (Shaolin Kempo). Started BJJ in the gi a few months before I turned 30, and ditched the gi just after turning 30... It was cheaper than a sports car.

I'm begin in 36, maybe late?
Started kung Fu when I was five, and BJJ when I was 20 ish. I have a student that is 9 and he hangs in the adult class with his dad. He's getting really good! lol

Karate @ like 6. This weird aikido-like-shit @ 7-12 and BJJ @ 12 or 13. I've also wrestled like two seasons in high school. MMA since I was 15. I'm almost 17 now. I had homemade Jiu Jitsu rolling with my brother until I got into my MMA team now a couple years ago. Now its full MMA.
I started when I was young, but jumped over to football, basketball and track....in high school I went to wrestling and jumped straight in bjj right after high school...my students range in age from 14-36 so there's always time to improve and start competing
