As a man who is aged nearer 60 than 50 I often wonder who are the older members still pitting their wits against these young upstarts in their 20s 30s and 40s.

Who are the older guys (or girls) in your 10th Planet Schools?
I am one of the older guys at my school. I am 48 and have been training for about a year or so. I believe there is one other guy who is in his 50's that train but I am typically the oldest. I have to go against folks of all ages, some in their teens and some old guys like me.
I think we are few and far between. There is another guy in Darlington who hit 50 this year. I wonder if there are any 60+.
I am 57 and I am in the gym whenever the door is open.
Ralf Warneking is a black belt in the system. and probably in better shape than 90% of people fullstop. Correct me if I'm wrong but he is past 50. He competed against a guy 24 years younger than him recently, while injured and still did bloody well.
Age can be a factor but it doesn't have to be. just more reason to work harder.
I get in 3 to 4 times a week. I am still working but I try not to let it get in the way. I know of Ralf and yes I believe he is over 50.
Age shouldn't be a factor really. it's what you can do and adapting for the things you can't. I'm 57 this year and looking forward to a few more years on the mat.
Yes Bob I just spotted the script on your picture. I see you on your profile pic and I'm thinking I recognise the other guy. Demetrious Johnson. Nice shot.
I personally like rolling with the younger guys, they tend to be more dynamic and fun though they never really seem to get tired :(
Jayamilne they are ALL younger
So true, so true!
You don't quit playing because you get old, you get old because you quit playing.
Ralph is a bad ass. I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2012 when we were both visiting hq. I'm 47 and usually the oldest guy where ever I happen to be.
Totally agree with that statement.
It seems like Ralf Warneking is the flag bearer for the more mature players. I've seen some of his videos and you can see he has so much enthusiasm. Also flexibility, dexterity, strength and what looks like about 1% body fat which always helps.
Im 44 years young and I do ok..
To you older gentlemen, do you find that you roll differently than the younger guys? Are there differences in technique selection based on your age, flexibility, etc?
I turn 48 in July and am the Indy Moonhead and still compete in tournaments as well MMA. I'm one of the older Moonheads. i think there are a couple older than me.
As far as technique selection, I don't think it's age based. I think everyone has their own style based on their ability and success. Flexibility does play a part but not due to age. I'm more flexible now than 30 yrs ago when I was in high school and hell, look at Eddie, he's a few years younger than me and look how flexible he is.
Fair point, Jay, thanks for the answer.
I'm 43 and have some injuries that will never go away.. I think i do ok with the younger guys... but im a target also for the guys that just want a to tap a higher belt.. Do you guys in older range and higher belts also have to deal with that? and if so, what are your advice if any.. Also do you feel that you need to push more and more cus all these younger folks they seem to never stop LOL. Any way just my 2 cents..
I feel your pain Manny. Literally. I have injuries that are with me always. I think sometimes some of the the younger guys are disappointed with them selves if they have to tap to me (body language). I get some respect because I am older and still active, but I don't like it when respect changes to "going easy on the old guy".
There are guys in my gym who can smash me at will. With those I get my kicks from a pass or an escape from a sub attempt with these guys. I delay the inevitable as long as I can. If I put them in a tight spot they usually have another gear. I entered NAGA UK this year. It was refreshing to find a tournament that had a category for my age group. (Executive). I think the fact that I am more than 10 years older than the next closest team member put me in good stead when I finally got in a match with someone my own age and weight.
Dont forget about Master Eddie setting the bar high for us over 40 guys in his rematch with Royler. He was ripped
