10th planet JJ vs JJ Fundamentals?

Coming from sport and most recently gracie jiu jitsu training, i was wondering peoples thoughts and opinions regarding the very controversial statement of "10th planet lacks fundamental jiu jitsu"? In example, escapes and defenses from basic positions, transitioning/maintaining good positions, and basic attacks?

Obviously i see the main positions of 10th planet being halfguard, rubberguard, spiderweb(for arguments sake lets say these 3 only) now do instructors or schools personally incorporate beginner fundamentals before or with 10th planet classes? or is it sort of like everyones first couple of weeks as a whitebelt where you tap and learn what works and what doesnt?


**Please note these are not my opinions by any means but just views ive seen develop and take place not only online but through out different schools, people ive encountered with over the years.

Having no experience with 10th planet other then attending some seminars for fun, i would love feel more confident in hearing you all share your experiences.

The concept of the 10th planet warm ups is genius. It ensures every single student of 10th planet will invest their time practising the fundamentals within every class regardless of what level they are. You only have to watch the last couple of MTS episodes to see Eddie surrounded by his black belts and breaking down the warm ups in detail even though they have already drilled them hundreds of times. They have probably become more important to the system than some of the positions you have mentioned and have made sure you have the basics in your game. That's just my feeling from training in London, knowing how much emphasis our moonhead places on the warm ups and seeing how that drive has come straight from HQ. Also seeing these techniques instinctively being used more and more in competition as it becomes part of our DNA.

Where I train we learn a great deal of what most people would call fundamentals. Several mount escapes, several side control escapes, arm bar from mount, armbar from technical mount, armbar from the back. But our curriculum does not have darce, guillotine, jap-necktie. It doesn't have the any of Eddie's escapes. It doesn't have lockdown, or RG, or truck.

It really begs the question of what are the fundamentals? Is lockdown fundamental? I think so, but it's not taught at my gym. So does my gym not teach fundamentals? My gym teaches DLR guard, spider guard, crab guard, all to whitebelts. Are those fundamental? I don't really think so.

I'm pretty sure that if 10p guys were all getting smashed in competition because they didn't know certain things, that Eddie and the system would evolve to handle that. I believe that if you train at a 10p school you will come away with fundamentally sound jiu jitsu.

i definitely can relate man. the question for me becomes whats fundamental to what im trying to gain or accomplish. ive been going through a rough time with jiu jitsu as a whole when it comes down to what style is best for me and what i want.


i dont train mma anymore, nor do i train sport. i left a gjj affiliate school in my area after being disgusted with the business/money attitude i received there after i was on the hook with auto-pay following my introductory lessons.

i understand you cant paint a broad brush and say this is how all schools or this art is because of one bad instructor but yea.

for me i think there are an abundant amount of resources available whether online or in academys/gyms. soo much information that even for myself i have to step back and say hey is this fundamental to the building blocks of my grappeling/jiu jitsu?

everything can eventually become fundamental in terms of relativity. a purple-brown belt can have a fundamental escape from side mount that transitions into a darce combo ect.. eventually people find things they are comfortable at.

I've seen a decent amount of curriculums and there hasn't been a system that's as all-encompassing from a no-gi perspective than 10p. Even a lot of the stuff works in Gi. My only gripe is that some may discount the value of the gi for developing reflexes and body-weight sensitivity. If it's a preference thing, I get it. Some days the grip game hurts my fingers, it's more laundry, and an unwashed gi left anywhere will almost invariably leave a putrid smell within a few minutes. Try packing a dirty gi into your checked luggage coming back from a trip, it'll smell like death. That being said, Eddie did start 10th planet only after getting a black belt in the gi, so therein lies an argument that one should master it before they discount it. I've found however that your overall game will not be adequately well-rounded without a healthy injection of 10p.

There's a lot of schools that consider Gracie Combatives the fundamentals. A lot of it is just everyone considers different stuff fundamentals and a lot of the people that knock other spots have never trained at them. One of the things that drew me to 10P's system is that it's a little more base, there's an emphasis on closed guard work and I liked that it avoided the heel hook/leg lock battle game a bit though I know that's changing now. I want to have a solid leg lock game don't get me wrong it's just not personally my game, I don't enjoy it as much.

Disclaimer: This post will sound mad-douchey, which is not the intent. Bear with me on this, and hopefully it won’t have quite the same essence of douche at the end.

This is just my take on this. Fundamentals = basics. So what are basics? Basics, it would seem, are the foundational things that make everything else work. If you were a highschool wrestler, you probably have a lot of wrestling fundamentals already down, but they often times do not translate to jiu jitsu. For example, you may keep your butt really high in the air from top side control, and this will result in getting swept, or having your opponent slide his/her knee inside and capture guards, etc. So…why are these fundamentals so different?

Well, someone (or some people) developed the fundamentals…but how? In psychology, there are different methods of learning that have been studied. One of the most applicable form of learning is called classical conditioning. Textbook definition of classical conditioning is: a procedure by which a previously neutral stimulus comes to elicit a response after it is paired with a stimulus that automatically elicits that response. For example, seeing the blue lights from a police car give most people a feeling of anxiety…something it probably didn’t do when you were a little kid. This response has been learned…you have been conditioned to feel this way, which leads you to respond. One might say a fundamental in such an instance is to take your foot off the gas pedal…it’s probably the first thing most of us do without even thinking about it. This is a conditioned response.

So…in the example of the blue lights (when comparing to the definition of classical conditioning), which components are which? The blue lights are the previously neutral stimulus (i.e. they didn’t used to make you anxious). The response is anxiety. The stimulus that automatically elicits that response is the interaction with a police officer, which boils down to a threat (possible ticket, guaranteed time wasted, authority figure detaining you on the side of the road hounding you for personal information, etc.).

Okay…all that being said, even if a person doesn’t go through what might be considered an “industry standard” fundamentals class (or whatever)…he or she will still learn many fundamentals simply by participating in jiu jitsu…it’s part of how the fundamentals were discovered (that and a ton of other methods, I’m sure). Look at the example of the wrestler with his butt in the air again…after he/she gets swept a few times, the feeling of having his/her butt in the air will elicit a feeling of anxiety (or “oh shit”), and the conditioned response will be to lower that butt. After rolling like this for a while, this same person might not have his/her hips low enough, and opponents may sneak a knee in and retain guard…eventually this will lead to a sense of anxiety when the knee starts to come in, and will result in a conditioned response of flattening that leg out and gluing that hip to the mat. This position will probably look very similar to the position taught in an “industry standard” fundamentals class.

This is how we learn a lot of things…not just in jiu jitsu. Even in a fundamentals class, a person might learn one single way to get out of mount (elbow escape for example). What if we elbow escape, and our opponent counters with a chair-sit and we get arm barred? Well…the next time we elbow escape and our opponent tries to chair sit, we will respond differently than we did the last time. Maybe we get caught with something else, maybe not, but our conditioned response it to react when the person chair-sit in this instance…we know we have to react, even if we haven’t been taught this by another person. Obviously, this is getting a bit off the beaten path of the subject to a degree, but I think this is one of the main reasons people get so pissed about the online belt promotions that do not incorporate any rolling…a lot of fundamentals are developed simply by rolling. …especially with people better than you.

Anyway…hope this makes sense.

The fundamentals are not specific techniques. They are, rather, ideas. Philosophies. Expressions. Concepts.

The fundamentals are things like Weight Distribution, Timing, Patience, Proper Framing, Maximizing Leverage, etc...

So a technique like the Bridge and Roll escape is taught on Day One, but why is it that only incredible Black Belts seem to be able to pull it off? Because their understanding of the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu is so deep that they can convey powerful principles with simple techniques.

Those fundamental principles can be expressed through any technique, provided the teacher has a meaningful understanding of the principles. This is why someone like Jean Jacques Machado can look at your technique, even if it's not a technique that he has ever used, and help you to improve it dramatically. His understanding of Jiu Jitsu is so deep that he can turn any technique, no matter how foreign it may be, into Jiu Jitsu. That's powerful.

So, there are no fundamental techniques. There are only fundamental ideas, and these can be expressed through a variety of curriculums.

Cerebral response. It had me thinking of a quote that I heard Gui Mendes say a while back. First lemme paint the picture: this was the video that gained some controversy from the Gracies since the Mendes brothers were asked about how sport bjj would fare in a streetfight. Gui's response was something along the lines of "Well if you do jiu jitsu the right way in the street, it doesn't matter what technique you use. If it is jiu jitsu done properly, you will be safe." It was something like that. I'm paraphrasing. But the quote was interpreted as people saying "Oh the Mendes bros are morons cuz they think a berimbolo would work in a street fight."

Lemme tell you something. I bet Gui or Rafa could berimbolo the shit out of guys in a street fight and live to get away with it. Why? Because they've broken that position down to the point that they could catch it on the highest level. They're professional athletes. Notwithstanding, I would never recommend someone use that type of technique with such variable consideration for the clinch in a streetfight. If you watch though, their reflexes and distance management as they attack the berimbolo are immaculate. Beyond exceptional. Gui may have spoken for himself and his brother, and maybe some of their black belts I'd bet, but who else? Hence the controversy.

I think Gui's quote was taken out of context, and I can appreciate where his point of view is coming from. The problem I have with it however is that some may not look too deeply into the quote with his broken English and decipher what he meant by "Jiu jitsu the right way". That means perpetual consideration for distance management, points of contact, elbows, hips, knees, timing patience all of what bmac said etc. etc. It's jiu jitsu principles upon principles. And then principles upon that. Go on youtube and watch Rafa whoop Jake Shields' ASS and you'll know what I'm talking about. That video is the Da Vinci code, I swear to God. He didn't berimbolo in it, but my overall point is that if the principles are understood, considered, and applied, there's virtually no technique that can't receive further refinement. I too was mislead in a way when i made the decision to leave my "sport" jiu jitsu school for a gracie affiliate. Everything is all extremely orchestrated from the point of contact to the cult like structure. dont get me wrong i think combatives has some real benefit, and i will be dedicating the next 3 months to go through it however i think it would of been better to have it out there that it isnt the "end all be all" of fundamentals/self defense."

Regarding a few posts above to Master Bravo's comments, what is the nogi basics taught at HQ or the main affiliated schools? im just curious as to see if it differs from the erik paulsons CSW dvd collection i have.

I would love to do the combatives. Since learning about their approach I've felt like it was a really smart way to begin the journey. Makes sense to me for a lot of reasons.

In the early years of 10p, I focused most of my teachings on a very aggressive clinching offense. I didn't spend much time on defense at all. In football there's an old saying, "the best defense is a good offense", and that was my mind set back then. But now with the 32 flows that are in the 10p warm up curriculum, defense and escapes have become a very big part of the system.

definitely, alot of the remarks i got from my instructor during rolls even with "bigger stronger/more experienced grapplers" was i needed to stop thinking defense and attack. just because you defend ok doesnt mean you HAVE to, so ive tried from then on to have a more offensive mindset.


@ master eddie, i recall reading a thread from mixedmartialarts.com the 2nd post down said you should be a gracie bluebelt and be able to put your leg behind your head before starting 10th planet system? im not sure i the user was trolling or if this indeed was something mentioned but just curious as it relates to the topic of "fundamental" or not. as im deciding to start your system! heres the links http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/thre...-beginner-BJJ/

I'd tell them to review the warmups then ask them what we're missing...

I started my first 2 years of training at a "traditional" bjj school with, what was supposed to be, a set curriculum. I can say having been training solely at 10th Planet San Diego for the past year, I felt like I had wasted a lot of time having trained at my first school. The amount that I am able to learn from Boogey in each class is exponentially more than I learned in my first school. One of my closest friends trains at a very good Gracie school. I was talking to him and explaining that we don't just learn a single technique in each class. We go through the scripted warmups and then learn multiple techniques that chain together. And that, intellectually just makes more sense for me. I've talked to many friends from other schools who feel like our warmups should be implemented in every school. I debated going and also training in the gi again, but I went and rolled with my buddy at his place and it reaffirmed that it just doesn't interest me right now. Just like what Geo said in his interview. I will probably someday go back to the gi in the future, but for now I just feel like we learn all of the "fundamental" concepts of jiu jitsu in our programs.

Its just sad to me how many people like myself were easily misled into this line of thinking that 10th planet was lacking fundamentals or was inadequate for a beginners fundamentals.

It disgusts me the amount of marketing GJJ goes through, my first experience with their organization was an affiliate who was like a cookie-cutter talking speaking version of rener. Technique ok yes fine, but phrases, mannerisms, ugh. No thanks, and dont get me started on the money part.

Glad to have soo many people hear clarify these urban myths so to speak lol.

The live warmup videos are nice but unless you have a 10p instructor to work with, you might find it hard to get that much out of them.

I would suggest signing up for MTS ($5/month). Then you can watch Eddie break down the warmups one technique at a time with all of the details described. There are a large number of critically important details in any Jiu Jitsu technique. The warmups are very densely packed with technique which means a mountain of details are going by very quickly. If you don't get the details right you'll just end up practicing bad technique.

I would also suggest the RG book and DVD.

good advice! i have all the books and dvds except the newer RG book. im currently talking to the Ann Arbor 10th Planet affiliate about joining ect so should resolve all this soon enough :)

When I travel, I visit a lot of gyms for open mat.

One of the big differences within 10th planet is the ability for a white and blue belt to leg lock. 10th planet doesn't limit your learning.

Every BJJ gym I have been to bans leg locks, except for brown belts and up.

i found this to be true also, granted when someone decides to try an introductory class or rolls for the first time ive also seen instructors forbid this.

The fundamentals are not specific techniques. They are, rather, ideas. Philosophies. Expressions. Concepts.

The fundamentals are things like Weight Distribution, Timing, Patience, Proper Framing, Maximizing Leverage, etc...

So a technique like the Bridge and Roll escape is taught on Day One, but why is it that only incredible Black Belts seem to be able to pull it off? Because their understanding of the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu is so deep that they can convey powerful principles with simple techniques.

Those fundamental principles can be expressed through any technique, provided the teacher has a meaningful understanding of the principles. This is why someone like Jean Jacques Machado can look at your technique, even if it's not a technique that he has ever used, and help you to improve it dramatically. His understanding of Jiu Jitsu is so deep that he can turn any technique, no matter how foreign it may be, into Jiu Jitsu. That's powerful.

So, there are no fundamental techniques. There are only fundamental ideas, and these can be expressed through a variety of curriculums.

Thanks, Pat. Hopefully I was able to demonstrate during the seminar what I was talking about here on this thread.

How about foundation techniques instead of fundamental? I have those old Gracie Fundamental tapes burned on to DVDs and they teach 90% of what you need to be familiar with in order to grasp most advanced techniques. I think it's by drilling these that you gain an understanding of the core principles of grappling. Your body almost subconsciously picks up on things like hip movement, top pressure, distance management. I think it's because the greats put the mat time in drilling the fundamentals that they gained that deep awareness. Most of the great instructors pass that on in a more comprehensive way so we don't have to spend as much time as they did letting our body figuring it out the hard way.
