Is there an advantage to having double outside ashi for the ankle lock, or is it just a different option to take? I still do mine old school with my knee in the middle. I don't like the idea of having my heels by my opponents arms. Why double outside ashi?
I am not worried about having my opponent pushing my knee to pass, because I make sure to have my knee in very deep and low, protecting my other heel.
Watch what Gordon Ryan and Garry Tonon do with their feet and figure four lock-up while they are moving through Double Outside Ashi to hide their feet from their opponents counters.
We have two very high level leg lock masters, both with different styles and different answers. I would pm that question to Chris Herzog and Sean Applegate.

It's not "better", though. I can generate quite a lot of force from single ashi, definitely enough to break an ankle.
I'm not a huge fan of DOA for straight ankle locks. I usually won't go there unless I'm heel hooking.
I agree with Sean that its better for heal hooking.
DOA makes the escape where they press the heel off their hip from ashi not work. Thats a good reason to transition to it.
I didn't use DOA much in the past and put serious, serious time into getting good at it just so I have more transitions. Their is also some enrtys where you enter DOA directly and if you haven't mastered DOA you can't use those. The more leg positions you can attack from, the more your attacks seem like they are never ending.
