I was thinking we could share lesson plans for those of us train with friends rather than at a traditional gym. Here are a couple we did this week.

Tuesday
Warm up: 2 min Shrimping, 2 min Pummeling, 2 min Plyometrics, 2 min arm bars from guard

10 min Stretch out

Mount escape to deep half to Homer Simpson "6 min then switch partners/position
Marcelo to back to swim move to arm crush ""
Pop Triangle to sit and pry triangle escape to knee reap to st8 ankle lock""

Sparring and cool down.

Wednesday
Warmup: 2min Armbars from guard (with no hands), 2 min penetration step, 2 min push ups. 2 min sprawling

Failed Hip bump to Triangle 6min then switch position/partner
1/4 Clinch to Mini Stomp to Lockdown to Mechanic
Under Pass to Darce

Sparring then cooldown.

As an educator the only thing I would comment on would be that there doesn't seem to be a common thread tying the lessons together. What is/are the relationship(s) between: "Mount escape to deep half to Homer Simpson...Marcelo to back to swim move to arm crush...Pop Triangle to sit and pry triangle escape to knee reap to st[raight] ankle lock."? A curriculum should have an intent. Whatever your long-term teaching goals are they should be reflected in the short-term work.

Learning is constructed; learners build new knowledge by incorporating it into knowledge they already possess. When crafting a curriculum, especially one whose purpose is to develop kinesthetic sense, each lesson should ideally be built upon previous lessons. Coach Herzog does this with his curriculum. Each series proceeds in a logical order and series' almost always build on the previous (unless we're starting something completely new). Here's kind of a hypothetical curriculum including some of the things we've been doing in beginner and advanced class (but more fleshed out for illustrative purposes):

Mount Escapes:
1) Guantanamo to lock down with double unders
2) Alcatraz to lock down with double unders

Half Guard:
1) Lockdown with double unders to whip up.
2) Old School sweep
3) Counter to Old School - Vice
4) Vice -> D'arce
5) Vice -> Japanese Necktie
6) Opponent circles preventing vice, -> Sprawl Control

Sprawl Control
1) Marcelo to the back
2) Marcelo to the back, opponent turtles, Snap Roll to the back

Back attacks
1) Anaconda to RNC
2) Anaconda to Goon choke
3) Chevy to the Twister
4) Scissor lock from failed twister
5) The Bouncer from failed scissor lock

Sprawl Control:
3) Marcelo to the back to swim move to Spiderweb

Spiderweb
1) Forearm crush
2) etc...


This is just a an example; the point is just that you can see how each technique is built from the previous and each section flows into the next. You can obviously choose to start a series wherever you want and transition to whatever series you want based on your goals and needs as long as they have a logical flow to them. If you build series' like this, then your students learn to put long transitions together and won't get "stuck" as easily. The flow diagrams in the books are a great place to start with curriculum development.

The way my instructor does it is a little more focused as well. Rather than random moves, we usually do a series in class. So, it generally starts with one or two basic moves (not basic in skill level, but in that they are primary attacks to begin the series). Than it follows "if he does this to stop you, do this instead." Sometimes he will show multiple different counters your opponent can use, and what you should do, while others, he will follow a chain of moves, in other words: teach move A, if opponent counters A, do B, if opponent counters B, do C, etc. This seems to give a strong awareness of how to actually use whole positions rather than moves, and how to persist in attacking when your opponent knows how to counter.

Also, the format of our advanced class (~2 hrs) is:

7:30-8:00 Very difficult "warm-up" / conditioning circuits. We use kettlebells and a bunch of other things to do 6-12 station circuits. We do things like squats on a half bouncy ball, kettlebell swings, clean and press with kettles, tons of burpees, pullups, dips, etc. It's most often 30 seconds on, 20 off.

8:00-(8:40-9:00) Technique work. This can go longer or shorter depending on the series, and how long it takes us to get used to the moves. He shows it about 3-8 times, going over details as he does, then watches as we pair up and practice.

(8:40-9:00) - 9:30ish Rolling.

Also sometimes we will do a short series, and then position sparring until 9. That is where you practice the moves you learned by starting in the same position. In other words, if you do a sweep series from half-guard, you start in 1/2, bottom has to sweep or sub, top has to pass or sub, then switch.

Coach Herzog does this sometimes too. I agree that it's a great way help chain together different series'. I like his analogy of a hallway with a bunch of doors on each side. The goal is to go down the hallway but if a door opens, know whether and how to take it. I assume that's why sometimes we work on transitions down a path (e.g. MC -> NY -> Chill dog -> kung fu move -> jiu claw -> omaplata) and other times we work several options from the same position (e.g. snap roll to the back; RNC, Goon, Chevy to twister, etc.). The "transition down a path" ones are the main hallways and the "same position" ones are the door options. Put them together and you have quite an arsenal. I think... :) Coach?
