wearing 10p in competition as a non 10p

So Grappling Industues Montreal is this Saturday (August 30th)and I was thinking about wearing my biomech 10p rashguard. Then I gave it some more thought and realized how would I feel if my student`wears a different schools logo on their rashguard... so unfortunately I wont be wearing it. But I was thinking about putting the 10p tights on. The logo is supper small and if I wear my shorts u don`t even see it, unless im on my back with my legs up.

So I just wanted to know what u guys think and if someone here has already done or thought of doing something like this before.

I'm going through the same thing. I'm pretty loyal to Elite, but I want to represent both sides of my heritage.

I think tights in nogi and a small patch in gi is where I will leave it.

Cora has always been wearing 10thplanet rashguard at many tournaments. Also we put 10thplanet patches on her GI pants just like Master Eddie. We currently have a few patches that we will put on both her tournament Gi. Why we do this? Well its just feels right and its part of having fun for her. Now keep in mind she does have patches of her gym logo as well on her Gi, best of both world kind of thing. Lucky we have a super cool instructor that is ego free and happen to love 10thplanet as much as we do. There are still plenty of real estate for more sponsors patches....(hint hint)...:)

Our team is basically a whole team of ronin. We do tenth planet stuff all the time. I think all of us instructors have flashed the gang sign on the podium. One of my fellow instructors competes in 10th Planet shorts. I usually wear my 10th Planet Hoodie at tournaments. We would be happy if our students wanted to wear 10th Planet stuff at competitions.

But, I can definitely see how other coaches might raise hell about it.

We've been wearing tenth planet stuff for years. But, for most of that period, 10th Planet wasn't very widespread and we felt like we were sort of helping to spread awareness of 10th Planet and combat the haters. Now that there are so many 10th Planet schools it's kind of changing. I am sort of expecting that one day, a 10th Planet white belt is going to come up to me and tell me I shouldn't be wearing my 10th Planet hoodie which I will have owned for years prior to them ever even stepping on the mats. hahahaha

Its too bad my tights are little short so I guesss people will see my sexy ankles ;)

the thing is that tristar quebec seems to be more for gi training for mma. some people especially the younger ones seem to be for 10p and some (or one) not so much. I dont want to give any names but it seems like this person thinks that Eddie started naming techniques like he invented them. One time I said oh yeah, like 10th planet does and he gave me a look like no. And then the second time i said something like that I said ``like 10th planet`.. but its all jiu jitsu` and he said ``yes`` lol, i just wanted to show him that I`m not an idiot, i know eddie didnt invent the lockdown or the swim move.

I wear 10p patch and rash guard when rolling mostly folks expect the rubber guard or twister... seems all the grappling styles always share moves and positions.... but all naga or something id be nervous about wearing 10p stuff around the schools group

if you feel bad about it then don't if not do as you please out of respect i'll tell them i'm wearing another school shirt for X reason unless your club has set rules for comp clothing or uniform set in place

Different situation if you don't belong to any school or are not part of any club, etc, and class yourself as a Ronin but if I had a club, lets say Taylor Jiu Jitsu and one of my students decided to wear a 10th Planet rashguard and not a Taylor Jiu Jitsu one I would be disappointed. Whether you have read Eddie's books, watched Zog's videos and posted on the Nibiru, it would still be me that has taught you Jiu Jitsu

However, they know how loyal I am to 10P; I always wear my 10P rash guards and my whole game is based around 10P techniques. They even have no issue with me competing in my 10P stuff. The only things they've ever asked of me are to give credit and props to our gym and learn their game that they're teaching me. So I can be completely decked out in 10P stuff, use only 10P techniques, and flash the gang sign all I want in competition; all I have to do is say that my gym is "Underground Jiu Jitsu" when rregistering. Some comps actually ask what gym you train at and what team you're on, so I usually say I train at Underground but my team is 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu.

Probably doesn't help you too much, but I figured I'd share my experience and let you know that there are a lot of great, open minded jiu jitsu schools out there.

My situation is a little different, because our school holds dual affiliations. We are 10th Planet and we are also TroopBJJ (Sylvio Behring liniage). So I wear a Troop Rashie and 10P Spatz (Cotton tights) when I compete, which is not often enough.

I planned on hitting this Montreal tourney, but things got a little "up in the air" with our time off and holiday planning. Now I missed the window, which sucks because I am going to Ottawa this weekend for Friday but I could probably make it to Montreal for Saturday after all.
Crap happens.

I am looking forward to getting my new 10P spatz and Shorts in the mail for future tourneys! (Already ordered!)

i'm leaning towards this idea. i think the bonds formed from training and competing with your partners is paramount (assuming you're benefiting from your training, with the exception being everyone else is on a different skill level or your personalities clash)

hypothetically, if you had a training partner at your gym and someone here on this forum (similar level and you would consider yourself to be in good standing with each) who both wanted you in their corner for support for a fight/tournament, who would you go with?

It would have more to support 10 p but I agree with u. The more I think about it the stupider it would be for me to wear a 10 p rash guard. Also this is my 3 rd gym that I train at. It hasn't even been a year yet, but either case, I'll just wear the tights.

As a Ronin in general, I train at a few diff schools and none of them have ever pressured me or said they felt dissed if I didnt rep their gear. All my tourney gear the first few years was a UA rashguard and shorts with the 10thpjj patch on it, and this year I started wearing the 10thpjj rash too (one of the schools I train at the instructor even helped coach me, and he has never pressured me to purchase his gear either).


I think it varies from case to case, you need to use your judgment and also do other things to help promote some of the places you visit as well.

Seems a tad disrespectful.

Why is that disrespectful if he was upfront with everybody about it and they're all cool with it??

I hope to open a hotbox one day so I have to rep.

Right now, my gym attire is my 10th planet gear. In the near future when I finally feel ready to compete, I would want to wear the BTT rashguard with 10th P shorts and tights. But when I come to that bridge, if there's any sort of political reason why I couldn't, I'd gladly wear my BTT rash only for that tourney.

I feel like not repping the team you sweat with, and the instructor who put in work to help you...it's kind of a slap in the face. So out of respect, I'll rep the team. I'm a fiercely loyal dude and BTT is a great school. I'd be honored to rep BTT.


But then I'll make plans to see if Coach Zog would be OK with me competing alongside the guys at 10th P Rochester. Because I'm always going to be loyal to 10th Planet Rochester as well. Either way, I plan on repping 10th in a tourney like it's one of my low hanging bucket list items. I'm weird like that.

Promote my team over an affiliation or alternate system. Wear what I please, when I please. Desire for my gym to succeed, sporting another outfits gear is possibly determiental and simply isn't on the table as an option.

I would always corner my own teammate, although, hypothetically, I may personally want you to win, I would also want my training partner to do well and rep 10P Glasgow as hard as they could.

Good thing I had the tights hidden by shorts cuz it was embarrassing. I lost the matches by submission ankle lock and guillotine in less than a minute I think, I hisitated too much because I knew he was better than me standing and he was fucking low at the beginning so I was surprised. I thought by avoiding his guard it would be safer but instead we were playing 50 5o which I never play and ankle locked the shit out of me, ankle popped but it's not that bad. All that for like 2 minutes 70 dollars plus 52 $ of gas money lol, I don't think I would have done much better if I wasn't on vacation 2 and half weeks ago like I said, he was good.

The second match I was more aggressive at the beginning he was backing off (and getting out if bonds fuck that's annoying) then I forget and eventually I ended up sweeping him off my ass ( I think u can call it sweeping or maybe tripping? It's the basic one, you ll see next week.) he falls on his ass I got into his guard somehow I don't remember, he try's to underhook my arm I limp arm it back or whatever, he guillotines me than the break it up put us in the middle and guillotines the shit out of me, I panicked forgetting the better way to pass the guillotine compared to what i used to do, I guess it's better but anyways, he had a butterfly hook on his left foot so I forgot which side to lay on ( I can't believe I forgot..) so I just hold my hands and started thinking what to do, even listening for my coaches/teammates couldn't hear anything. Then I waiting awhile , felt like forever, than tapped out. I was going to pass on the wrong side too, I don't know what I was thinking, maybe it's because I'm used of getting guillotined on the other side but whatever.

Did you have fun? Did you learn something? If you had an imaginary match against the fighter you were before the tournament, would you beat your former self? If you answered yes to any of these questions then your experience was worth more than the cost of going whether you won or lost.

Don't beat yourself up too much mate, competing is the ultimate test of your skills and you will always find something you need/want to improve! Good on you for getting in there mate, most important thing is you had fun! Will you be posting links to the videos?

im not sure lol, there wasnt much of a battle, but at least as far as game plans go i shouldnt have had one. I should have just gone into his guard when he open his legs up.

I think u can rep 10p gear as long as it's not ranked gear. I know I read zog saying a bunch not to wear ranked gear unless u are officially promoted by a 10p instructor or something.

even white belt? Anyways, I wouldn't, I dont train at 10p so it wouldnt make sense to wear their rashguard. I dont even have the time to train other techniques after class, i feel like it would disrespect my instructor but i used to do it anyways. I will again soon.

looking back at the video, i feel rally stupid the way i defended that.. i didnt pay any attention to his foot locking my hip, i thought by defending the arm first then the leg to give me time to get away. I have watch the 10p warmups and the mts episode about warmups b hailmaries and i fucked up on something like this in competition. I was so bumbed out after. Anyways, maybe next time.

1) It is disrespectful towards the gym where you normally train.
2) It is disrespectful towards 10th Planet; you haven't "earned" the right to wear our name since you haven't trained with us.

I find both of these claims to be very weak; I recommend wearing whatever is comfortable and gives you any sort (even trivial) competitive edge (e.g., better grip, intimidate opponents). In the following, I'll examine each claim separately.

Presumably you are paying both your gym for training and the tournament organizer for the chance at competition. If you feel like the Palestinian diaspora is woefully underrepresented in the popular consciousness, wear a Hamas rashguard. If all of your spiritual strength comes from the love of Christ, wear a shirt with a big-ass cross on it.

I reject this because I believe we have a pretty low threshold for "earning" the right.

Our (Eddie's) philosophy has always been one of abject open-mindedness. We "steal" techniques from anyone if they seem to be useful (or if they look cool), and we teach everyone we can (for a minimal fee. I mean seriously minimal. Go try to find a Gracie Barra price list. I'll wait.). We want this system and this mentality to spread across the land like the black plague, improving jiujitsu, making it more exciting to spectators and more welcoming to beginners, and generally increasing the sum total of badass in the world. We design super sweet rashguards so that people buy them and wear them and look amazing while competing and training.

To me, if you love jiujitsu, are humble, want to learn all of the effective techniques that you can, and want to help spread this great sport as much as possible, you are 10th Planet. Watch Mastering the System, read Advanced Rubber Guard, buy that rashie, and wear it. You've earned it, Playa, as much as I have.

Well according to your definition I should wear it lol. But it's a bit too late. I wore the tights though. Also I don't want to make 10 th planet look like shit cuz I kinda suck. Maybe at SFL Quebec competition I'll wear it. It's in 3 weeks. It's way smaller than grappling industry. I was even told by one person to save my money and not go, but fuck it, I'm busy with work and married so I'll compete when I can. I watch mts religiously, of course I don't try any of the too advanced stuff but half guard stuff basic rubber guard , warm ups stuff. I probably intimidated the guys a bit when I was warming up doing cartwheels and head stands lol ( or not..).
Thx for your long ass responce, much appreciated! This is one of the reasons I feel like a 10 th planeter, people here help me out and listen and honest so I feel like I'm apart of the team even though I only trained once at 10 th planet in Los Angeles.

If you feel like the Palestinian diaspora is woefully underrepresented in the popular consciousness, wear a Hamas rashguard. If all of your spiritual strength comes from the love of Christ, wear a shirt with a big-ass cross on it.

Claim 2: You haven't "earned" the right to represent 10th Planet
I reject this because I believe we have a pretty low threshold for "earning" the right.

Our (Eddie's) philosophy has always been one of abject open-mindedness. We "steal" techniques from anyone if they seem to be useful (or if they look cool), and we teach everyone we can (for a minimal fee. I mean seriously minimal. Go try to find a Gracie Barra price list. I'll wait.). We want this system and this mentality to spread across the land like the black plague, improving jiujitsu, making it more exciting to spectators and more welcoming to beginners, and generally increasing the sum total of badass in the world. We design super sweet rashguards so that people buy them and wear them and look amazing while competing and training.

To me, if you love jiujitsu, are humble, want to learn all of the effective techniques that you can, and want to help spread this great sport as much as possible, you are 10th Planet.
