Leaning from DVD instructionals or off internet. Is it any good? I thinnk so!
A friend of mine has a grappling school and he and I taught
for years together. We had both trained with the Machados
the Gracies and other including Gokor. Together we collected hundreds of DVD
instructionals and we both taught from these instructionals.
People always thought the techniques we taught were ones
we had learned from live instructors and they were sometimes.
But most of the time we had learned from instructionals. Many
times when I saw him teach even I was wondering if he
learned from somebody personally or from instructionals even though
I knew he had learned off the DVDs. Many times we both pulled off
techniques we had just learned from these DVDs while going live.
I have gone to many grappling seminars and the only ones I can
remember much from are the ones I get a DVD of or later get the
guy's instructionals who taught the seminar. I always film anything
and everything I can and then watch it over and over again. Then
I get on the mat and drill the techniques over and over again.
I'll hear people say that you can't learn from just watching instructionals
and that might have some truth if you don't get on the mat and try and
drill the techniques. But who would watch instructionals and then
not get on the mat and work on them. Many of us live in remote areas
and don't have access to good schools. If Eddie Bravo or the Gracies or
anybody else makes an instructional what is the purpose if you aren't
suppose to be able to learn from them. Of course it would be better to
train with Eddie and any other great grappler but instructionals are your
next best thing and even if you are training with some great grappler
books and especially video instructionals are great. So what do you think?
