learning while injured

Hi guys,

I train at 10th planet Melbourne under Frank Barca.

Tonight I went into training armed with my notebook and decided i would sit and take notes. I have recently picked up a rib injury but had that jiu jitsu itch that needed to be scratched. Frank has just come back from a trip to LA to train with Eddie and the guys at HQ.

After just 10 minutes I had already filled in 2 pages in my notebook and had to force myself to put it down. The wealth of information that Frank learnt and is now passing onto the guys at 10th planet Melbourne was awesome. I watched the new leg lock drills and new tweaks to the warmups and was amazed.

With Frank buzzing and full of energy from his recent trip and time spent with Eddie, it honestly felt like watching an episode of MTS. It was just one of the many reasons why I love training jiu jitsu under Frank Barca and why I cant wait to recover and get on the mat again with the beasts of Melbourne.

Yeah, every time I come back from an injury I come back stronger. We all probably over train from rolling so much so the break is a big part of it but also I think we get caught up in the physicality of it and forget about the science and theory behind techniques. Every time I have gotten injured I have gotten way better and have come back and been able to pull off moves I couldn't before because I was watching from the outside. I could see people drilling and learning the technique see who was picking it up fast and why and who wasn't getting it and why.

You pick up a lot of info from sitting out of a class for once and its nice to do. If I am ever over trained and not feeling it to go to class or roll I will sit one out and train by watching and understanding.

yep, that's what your supposed to do when not being able to train for some reason. :)
i noticed too how i improved by just watching jiu-jitsu videos and mts-episodes!
when i realised that i was real happy because i understood it didn't have to bug me that much anymore if i'm injured or have to let something recover 'cause of the gains i'm able to get by watching, studying and thinking about techniques and rolls!
i even found myself troubleshooting techiques i felt i was doing something wrong with - all just in my head - and it helped!
you might not be able to practice pysically what you thought about but moves and concepts can still get very clear in your thoughts! and then you might want to write down what you thought about and technical stuff you want to change or some kind of an approach you want to work from now on..

Now you know why I've been there so much over the last four months even though I've barely been able to drill for most of that time. Gotta be employed in the mind.

Note taking is a great idea. I'm the kind of guy that has to watch something 10 times before I can drill it and notes help a lot. The good news is, when I drill, I get it pretty quickly. I think notes have a lot to do with it.
