The best wey of learning & teaching 10P

Hi guys!

I have a few questions about starting of lerning 10P system.

I train JJ in the class,both gi and no gi.Moreover I work a lot at home with son of mine.
We do crossfit mainly,but recently ground game and stad up to.

Since I saw Mastering the Rubber Guard DVD I cant stop thinking about the system.
Like others I learned from books & dvds with the belief that it works.

I have no way to train 10P,because there are not scholl in Poland,but in June I attended
my first seminar with Eddie in Stockholm,hosted by Magnus.It was a great time.

Newly I started work with my 17 years old son on some 10P basics, like old school from
lockdown,rubber guard, twister side control.

I still thinking about the best wey of learning & teching.

The big question for me is:

Is it the best wey to learn/teach 10P from absolute beginner level or its better to lern
traditional JJ moves before?

What do you think guys?

Just keep at it man. Repetition is key and in my opinion you can start using the basics of rg (basic path), lockdown half (jaws if life, whip up, old school, plan b, dog fight) and twister side control at anytime. The more you rep it, as long as you're doing proper technique, the better these areas will be.

Bartek: From my experience, I think one needs to have a good handle of the traditional jiu jitsu first before they can understand the 10thplanetJJ. For example, I have my 10 yr old daughter who been doing traditional jj for 2 years and her cousin who is 10 also. My daughter picks it up quickly because she know how to get the triangle from every position, all the armbars, all the kimuras, etc etc... vs my nephew who is new to JJ and he doesn't pick it up at all. He doesn't even know how to do a proper armbar or triangle. So now I don't even bother teaching him 10thplanetJJ because he can't comprehend it. My daughter pick it up right away. So that is just my experience, some here might have different experience or oppinon.

I respectfully disagree. Yea, of course if you have some jiu jitsu experience you will probably have an easier time picking up 10th Planet, but it's in no way a prerequisite. Look at your nephew as a blank slate, no bad habits to break, no predetermined opinions on what works or what doesn't. You can still begin his 10th Planet training by teaching him the basics of jiu jitsu, base, creating/closing distance, basic positions, etc. But that doesn't mean the first submission he learns can't be a Meathook Triangle from RG. I actually find 10th Planet to be easier for a beginner to comprehend than traditional jiu jitsu, which I believe was Eddie's intention when naming his transitions/submissions with detailed and catchy names. Anyway, those are my thoughts.

PS. It's been a while since I've posted because I've been extremely busy at work. Been tryin my best to catch up whenever I can. Missin my Nibiru fam! One love!

Disagree. I and I am sure many others find the 10th planet system in fact easier to learn due to the position names and all that stuff. :-)

My instructor is a Brazilian dude, pretty traditional and whenever he is teaching us technique if I know the 10p name for the position then I use the name. Helps me to remember the sequence/positions later on. :-)

The 10th Planet system is like reading an instruction book on how to build something correctly. Training traditional Jiujitsu is like driving in toyko for the first time.... :p hehe.

guys guys guys....its ok to disagree with me...remember, i'm no expert here. Besides what I said was base on 2 kids, two 10 yr old kids. And my nephew is NOT the sharpest knife in the shed when it comes to this kind of thing. He is the kind of boy that if the wind blows hard, he will swing the other way, if you know what I mean. That is why his dad gave up on him and ask me to train him. And right now I find it so difficult to do that. Its like pulling teeth. You can bring the horse to the water, but you can't make him drink it. And yes, perhaps that is the very reason why Cora picks it up so easily....because you guys are right...LOL

Hello!
I think that you just need start doing and drilling technicues as much as possible. Try to get group of nice people. Watch as much videos as possible. Think before training as much details about the technique you are going to drill. When sparring try to use techniques you have drilled so that you can combine techniques in a flow. After training think what worked and what did not. Check again the details.

I started in local mma club. Trained there couple of years. After that we started our own club. First we just sparred for fun. After awhile I noticed that we need to serially start drilling. Now we have nice training going on although we have no official hotbox.

I think as much mat time as possible will help no matter what school it is as long as you have fun and you learn. Never stop thinking about the techniques,details and try new things. For me, when I started I learned only single techniques but 10th planet offered a system to rely. Tool to get from point A to B to C :D , after that even basics make more sense.

I was also in Sweden. Actually maybe I rolled with you if I can remember right. Keep up the good work and keep improving.

I think having a basic understanding of the fundamentals is important first. I jumped into the advanced stuff first and one huge thing I've realized in my journey in jj is that, the fundamentals will only make you advanced techs better. At the highest level there are a ton of advanced techs being thrown around, but its usually the guy with a better understanding of one fundamental detail/position/control that gets the win. Not saying you cant start with the 10p stuff. The fundamental basics of no-gi are 10p. We are everything that works right :) people just benefit more from understanding whats going on. I mean an east coast croc isnt going to make any sense to someone who has no idea what an armbar from the guard is.

Knowing your fundamentals makes learning the 10thp system easier. Like if you dont know what side control is you how are you gonna know how to destroy the near arm and solidify twister side control. You know what I mean? So having a good structural understanding of the basic positions you will understand the 10th planet system easier. The way I learned the system (there arent any jj schools in my town) is I broke it down into a science. Each transition, counter, position is all based off of what your opponent does. Say like you go for the old school he hides his foot then you go for the electric chair. You counter his counter. The way I learned what I know is I started from half guard worked 3 techniques untill I had a good idea of how to use them then I try them in free rolls. Get the terminology down. The Names are a Huger staple in the system. 10th Planet as stated in previous post is laid out like an instruction manual. You have names for everything so you can remember what goes where. Once you get it down it turns into a language.:cool: Theres nothing cooler than the look on someones face when your talking on the phone to your fellow Nibiru Clan about techniques and they look at you like WTF is a zombie to NY;) I compiled a list throughout the 2 years Ive been practicing (off and on) of a majority of the names and where the go. Watch as much videos as you can, Get all the reference (both MTT MTR books, MTT dvd, MTR dvd, 10thp all Stars dvd) ask questions here on the forum, email the generals and ask them questions, they will always answer anything you wish to ask involving the system. Drill Drill Drill. Thats what I do. (off and on:( but I still get down) Just get the Ronin Method list pick 3 techniques and work on them untill you feel you got it down then move on to the next 3.
