Gonzaga to file complaint against Browne elbows

Gabriel Gonzaga will file an official complaint with the Nevada State Athletic Commission after his controversial knockout against Travis Browne on Saturday.
Gonzaga searched for a single-leg against the Octagon wall, but suddenly found himself crumpled on the mat after Browne delivered a series of serious elbows to the side - and arguably back - of his head.
The main point of contention may prove the angle of the elbows, which are deemed illegal if delivered at a 12-6 (north-to-south) angle. It appeared only one blow landed to the back of the head, but Gonzaga will contest both.
"I need to review it to count how many illegal elbows but it's a fact that it was illegal. I contacted Keith Kizer, head of Nevada Athletic Commission, and he told me to file a complaint and he would review it," Gonzaga's manager Marco Alvan wrote on Facebook.
"I truly believe it was illegal. I never complain about losses, [those] who know me know that I handle it good. But illegal we cannot accept.
"We appeal to the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The video is clear about the elbow… I hope the commission look at it carefully and make a correct decision about it.
"We respect Travis and his camp but it was a sad night. We hope this result can be fixed and get a new fight between them."
If successful, the appeal could wipe off Browne's victory after a night that saw him win the Knockout of the Night cheque. President Dana White was OK with the decision on the night, believing Browne's elbows to have been legal until Gonzaga fell to the mat.

What say you guys? Illegal? Reason for overturning? Ill admit one was straight to the back of the head and one was iffy but I dont see the commission doing shit about it. Gonazaga was already out and should just accept the loss and get ready for his next fight.

The one that put him on queer street and finished him was to the back of the head. But he turned his head which is different from Travis aiming for it. Its kinda like the Reap clause in jj. If he turns into it. His fault.

See I thought the one that buckled him was the one that was straight to his ear but that one to the back of the head prob didnt help him recover thats for sure.

From what I saw the last 2 were not legal but the first few elbow strikes were ok . They hit near the ear , which caused the kock-out.

There was one that dazed him that looked a like it was just behind the ear, which we all know is a killer but the last one that actually put him out was clean to the back of the head. Bit of a grey area really, I think because Bobby is right, Gonzaga did turn his head which lead to the blow, but ultimately, it was that illegal shot that ended the fight. Wasn't Browne's fault he landed there, he wasn't aiming for it, but again, that illegal blow did end the fight.

MMA rules are so vague.

I agree they when he started the strike they may have been 12-6 but by the time they land its closer to a 9-3. That one to the back of the head was solid though.

Has there been any instance a fight has been overturned by the commission that wasnt pee test related?

Yes. An undercard fight. A tko was set up by an incidental headbutt. They later ruled it a NC.

I feel that Brown's elbows were legal except one.

Here's the thing about those elbows. While the 4 of 5 shots he threw were behind the ear, which is technically the back of the head, the actual zone where illegal contact is enforced is a mohawk strip down the center of the head about 3 inches in length.
1. Gonzaga stuffed his head in a place where his head was open for buisness.
2. Gonzaga failed to prevent Brown from striking with his free hand, which gave him the opening.
3. Brown hammers down on Gonzaga with elbows that, while brutal, are reasonably legal up until the 4th and definitely the 5th. But Gonzaga is already going down. If hes already TKO'd from the "legal" elbows, the rest doesnt generally affect the outcome. Look up Fedor vs Henderson's finish for reference.
In my opinion, in standing MMA, if you fail to defend properly, you deserve to get blasted. I know as a sport we need to evolve it and sanction certain rules to safeguard, especially with elbows 12-6. But standing up, pushing another man against the cage? You better protect that overhook!
