I don't know if grips are stopping the sport but I agree that the grips allow you to slow the game down. I remember from my experience in the gi that I was able to generate leverage from the grips in ways that are impossible no-gi. The grips made it possible for me to handle someone 50 or 60 pounds heavier.Quote:

Both are important... Gi teaches you great fundamentals - look at all the people who transition from gi to big no gi tournaments they always win. Marcelo Garcia, Werdum, Ribeiro, Galvao - just saying the results don't really lie

that kinda discredits your previous statement, but i guess all the aforementioned competitors are obviously training no gi as well. You can still stall with the lapel and gi pants regardless of if it's sleeveless, but that would dramatically reduce the impact of grips.
GI and no gi are almost two different sports. Similarly the way judo and jiu jitsu have the same point of origin with different emphasis in mind.

There is alot of very talented Luta Livre guys in Brazil that have been training No Gi there whole life, but because of the Gracies success in bringing Jiu Jitsu to the U.S, Luta Livre has had a hard time getting here.
Now that No Gi is gaining popularity, you will start to see more Luta Livre finding its way to the U.S.
In Brazil they usually run separate tournaments, however at this Jiu Jitsu No Gi tournament, they invited Luta Livre guys and the Jiu Jitsu guys got smashed. http://www.rionalmeida.com/gi-vs-no-gi/
