Triangle Choke from Turtle (Video) Gold Medal Match

May 25th, 2013 -- Kumite Classic's Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania -- Men's Advanced 145 lb NoGi Division

This is 1 video thread of several more to come that follows up on my initial thread, titled:
"My 1st Competition in 5 years! (Video)"

From a 160 lbs to 145 lbs in the last video thread. Here I weigh in closer to my natural weight at 135 lbs.
Being that the lowest weight division was 145 lbs here at the Kumite Classic's I was able to weigh in the day of and eat breakfast before weigh ins. (:

Well. Enough talk.

Deceiving thread title. More like triangle from the back. Badass either way. But I was expecting you to be the one hitting a triangle FROM the turtle.

Honestly I'm not sure when I started using this set up from top turtle or where I learned it from.
I do remember it is one of few set ups I use, that is not featured in Ryan Hall's The Triangle DVD.

I really like that DVD (:

Also. Jason Scully has a YouTube video of "52 Triangle Choke Set Ups in Just 8 Minutes"
Of those 52 set ups he shows. This one was not included. Hmm.

I'm sorry if you felt deceived. I normally refer to the position as Top Turtle.

Back Control, Back Rack, or Back Guard. I normally use those titles for when I have my hooks in. Or sometimes a body triangle from the back. Typically with myself laying on one of my hips or my back completely on the mat with my opponent facing upwards.

Technically. If you're submitting an opponent, and they end up out of bounds, you don't restart in the position, so for your case they would have taken you out of the triangle, and put you in a neutral position, and then awarded you an advantage point. I do however think that if you walk somebody blantently out of bounds you can get a penalty or even Dq'd. But that's just my interpretation of the rules.

After looking back through my notes, I now know that, yes I did learn this set up from Ryan Hall.
No surprise there, lol. Being that Ryan Hall has arguably the best triangle choke in the business.

the out of bounds rules are always shaky. they are very clearly defined, yet somehow, every reff has a different idea of what they mean.

Though I have been greatly improving my control within the lockdwon over the past 4 months.
During this match I had a gable grip around my opponent's leg (1:28) and could not establish my base to come to the top.
Yes, I stuck with it and eventually achieved my goal. But from those grips specifically I feel I could be more efficient.
Any advice?

It was a fun match.
And looking back, it was an exciting way to finish the tournament (:

It is an awesome set up, catches a lot of people by surprise.
I give credit to Ryan Hall for introducing me to this set up.
I get excited like a kid in a candy shop when I see the opening for the submission! xD
