Judo is not all throws and td's. the newaza stuff is gold. Judo is not obsolete.
Because of the threat of judo, the opponent instantly gives you top position. Seems to me it is working just fine, wouldn't complain about that.
Not takin a swing at ya Micheal, just speaking in general.
It's all grappling. Whether its bjj, judo, wrestling, catch.. Doesn't matter. It is a label we put on a tech that speaks of origin, not effectiveness. The success of a move will always rely on timing and execution. Judo has its place in an overall grappling game for sure, but it can't be forced. As your overall game comes together they will fall right into your skill sets. To take the label of a move or discipline, including bjj, past anything other than origin automatically limits your growth as an overall well rounded grappler. I hear it all the time with, 'I do it because I'm a wrestler' and such. Nothing wrong with any individual art at all, but the evolution and future of grappling is a combination and assimilation of all effective techniques into one. Grappling. Do the right tech, at the right time, and do it right. The best style is no style and all styles.
Good point Greg. Just gotta get my passing in order and it will be effective. Silver lining.
Here in the Midwest, sitting is not as common from what I've seen. There are so many wrestlers competing so stand up dominates to the point so that guys will even let you stand up again if their ground game isn't working. This way they can rack up more points. In all of the competitions I've done, I have been more likely to pull guard than my opponents. It could be something based on where you live. Also, Eddie has placed a strong emphasis on passing for the rest of this year so rep a few passes nonstop so you have options to hit when this happens at the next tournament :-)
Great point Bobby. My biggest issue is their is still a disconnect between my judo game and bjj game. When I start standing I expect my opponent to react like a judo player. When they don't it takes a second for my brain to switch gears. You are a hundred percent right about grappling being grappling but how certain grappling "styles" act in certain situations is due to the rule set they come from. My example being I am used to an opponent not sitting like this because it is illegal in judo competition and none of the bjj guys I usually train with sit to guard automatically so I was taken out of my game a little. Lesson learned though.
This is pretty common but you will get guys who will stand. I like when people sit down cause at this point im working to get my guard passing resps in. I figure if they know my guard passing is in the beast mode range (Leandro Lo) then guys wont pull. Granted my takedowns suck so anytime I can play guard Im comfortable.
Now that I have seen this I feel the exact same way Brent. I want people to fear even thinking about sitting. With my judo throws and ultra guard passing I will rule the world muhahaha...sorry little too much sugar.
