Love the thread; I'm trying to get my girl interested. She's ok with it but the whole rolling with guys thing is a problem for her (she's well-endowed shall we say and that raises some concerns for her. Along with the whole getting choked thing...). I've been preaching Eddie's Gospel of "RAPISTS DON'T BOX THEY WRESTLE!" for a while now and I'm hoping she and other women will come around. Besides, it's FUN! That's why I do it and I assume that's why the ladies posting here do it too.
So whatddya think... Gabby vs Ian in the "Battle of Who's Ironing Whose F------ Shirts?!" Can I get some odds?
Well Gabby just won gold at Grapplers Quest so I'll put my money on her via Flying Armbar.
no doubt I love the Lady Killers, Kyra gracie is super hot.
My Montreal boys always got my back! <3 hahaha.
But seems to me quinto has alot of time on his hands, maybe he should swing by DE sometime hmm..?
Probably still living in his Mom's basement.. pathetic.
There never seem to be as many women as guys willing to do serious training in some sports, but sorry Quinto, in my experience the ones that do leave the guys in the dust. I trained alongside women for years when I was Rowing and they set the standard for work ethic and toughness.
Im trying to get my Girlfriend brave enough to come train, she is nervous and has not plucked up the courage yet. Any tips girls? Pisses me off because she has all the physical attributes, I wish I had. Her flexibility is crazy.
My other problem is stopping the other guys training in the gym making comments when the girls are rolling. Iv threatened them with violence, but thats pretty much what they are there for.
Hey Kim (and any other ladies on this post)! I am very interested in picking your brain as far as how to get the female enrollment up at both of my locations. I'm talking grass roots here, advertising, word of mouth, whatever! For whatever reason I currently have zero at either location and I'm a little frustrated. It always seems like I meet people who are interested but they don't want to roll with the guys, or maybe that's an excuse? So, I'm asking you all for some ideas or suggestions. What promoted you all to train where you do and what can I do to get my program rolling.
Thanks in advance!
Well, our reg. daily classes are usually myself(purple) and Karen(blue), Char comes some Thurs. and I think Rachel(blue) will be back this Weds. For ladies Sunday class we have maybe like 4 regulars that are all white belts and then like 5-10 that come off and on -all white.
Dawna, Char, Juli(blue) are HQ but not sure if they have any new regulars over there.
Maybe we can do ladies at Burbank either like a Weds or Thurs. when you come:) I'd like to do one at HQ and one at Burbank if we can swing it.
ian...you seem to have forgot what rank you are...and why are you on the ladies thread starting shit? You guys have a TON of threads to talk shit, boost your egos, troll and look at butts...we just want this ONE. thank you
Neale, I would love to talk shop with you on this...maybe message me? I am becoming quite the expert but am coming to the conclusion that for the masses ya gotta start with a ladies only class and a lot depends on your gym, your students and the general attitude on the mat.
Nobody should ever let someone else intimidate them away from doing something they want to do. If your girl wants to do it, it's up to her. They guys might be rude or they might be cool but that is not in her control, going to class is- just do it! and hopefully as her boyfriend you can steer her toward good partners. I personally would not allow people in my gym to comment in a demeaning way to anyone. We all talk shit and give each other a hard time:)- maybe speak to your instructor.
When I decided I want to train under Eddie all my Gi buddies were like "oh, man, you don't want to train with those guys! they are all ego-ed out, hot shots." When I finally went to a class Eddie was SUPER nice and helpful and most of the guys were very open and willing not only to roll with me but help too. Honestly one of the best first class experiences I ever had and I trained like every decent JJ school in the LA area!
Crazy how jiu jitsu is the absolute best martial art for women yet so few do it. But who knows, maybe it's just one very successful reality show away from being the next pilates :)

maybe you can get more women into the mats if you advertise to them diffirently...most women only associate Jiu-jitsi with MMA..and most women dont want to fight or to be in a sport that makes them seem too masculine or tough. advertiseing the sport as self defense does help some...but i have yet to see anyone try to focus on the health and weightloss benifits..whitch is a big factor to most women, you cant market to women the same way you market to men..not trying to be sexist or bias but this is true, companys spend millions to have studys done to focus on a core group. age, sex, race, income,religion..and hundreds of other factors that you would never imagine effect the way they advertise.
case in point is a gym i use to go to where the owner advertised his awsome powerlifting programs and had pics of men and women bodybuilders,,and chalk everwere...guy drove a old pick up that was as broke as he was..well some "couple" came in and made him an offer that just barely got all his debt paid off....only thing they did was changing the paint from dark purple and black to white and brought in a few more treadmills and advertised about health and weight loss and family atmosphere..well they pack it out now and that first gym is now three..and all due to marketing
i mean im sure most instructers are wanting that female to come in that is a hardcore roller and they can take to NAGA but if you advertise for just that type of female you will alienate a LARGER group.
just saying
ian quinto with the bait!, hook line and sinker.
I cry inside everytime i see the girls leave after kickboxing class. The should skip kickboxing altogether and do jiu jitsu. The trick is to get a couple girls who are serious. Others will follow, ts just hard when there is one girl who tries it with a bunch of guys.
I don't think just training with guys is a negative thing. I for the most part I only have men to roll with. I just set limits... No one over 170, and I ask them not to just muscle a move because they can. It can be daunting and discouraging at times but I think that it has made me have a good defense. If they are douche bags who just neck crank me every time just because they are afraid of losing to a girl, I wont roll with that dude. As a girl, I have more say in who I roll with. I am lucky because I have a great gym and really nice guys. No one is a douche with a big head.
Agreed with Kendra. Well said. I play it the exact same way. The guys I train with are awesome, very rarely do I get guys who are all too keen to 'beat up' on a girl (only becauase they can out muscle me :) ). My wish is to see more ladies on the mat.
the latter
just like this one

i was gonna shop your face on the old man
and some of the 10p women on the girls
but i guess i would get banned for that
What I meant was, the girls get spooked. They may even try a class, but they don't stay for the long haul. If there were other girls who consistently showed like you and was fine rolling with the guys. It would encourage other girls to take that chance. Its the whole, if she could do it I could do it attitude. It just takes one, the rest will follow. I even spoke to Louis about how Kim gives free girl classes to see if he would be interested. It might help introduce them to the art without any commitment.
Wow, there are more of us than i previously thought!
I'm Ashley Kennedy-Foster and i have been training with Chris Herzog at 10th Planet Rochester NY for about 2 years. I love competing - there is no greater rush! Some time or another i should figure out my exact record.
I've been lurking on the Nibiru forums for quite some time - but i finally posted today!
I've been seeing a handful of girls walk into our gym - I think the kickboxing circuit class is what gets them in the door (fitness and cardio is a draw for women) - and if they did have an interest in seeing what the JJ classes had to offer, they get totally spooked by the thought of getting rough-housed by the guys - but also maybe a little bit of not wanting to be the only girl in class.
It's a weird tipping-point kind of thing, once you have 2-3 girls, more start coming in - that's how our kickboxing classes are playing out. You just need to find 2-3 of those girls that don't care about rolling with the guys, so walk-ins can see that getting paired with other girls is an option.
Ashley: you're the example I keep using whenever someone asks me about girls and jiu jitsu. Judo, jiu jitsu, beginner class, advanced class, competitions, seminars... there's Ashley -- usually standing over some poor guy flopped out on the mat after the buzzer wondering what just ran him over. I really feel like your a great example for anyone who wonders if she should try grappling. Glad to see you posting. :)
Exactly Ashley. All we need is a few girls and it will grow exponentially.
We are starting my little girl early. She is three. My wife is warming up as well. We also have a seventeen year old at the gym and she beats up on some of the guys.
If I ever have a little girl FOR SURE she will be learning jiu jitsu from an early age. Yoga and jiu jitsu. My little girl will be able to whoop any man's ass by the age of 10. :)

This was when my kids were 7 (twin girls). Eddie put this on his blog about a year ago. But I started them at 5...they lost some interest about 2 months ago, but have recently asked about starting jj again.
I wrestled for 8 years and trained with guys because there were no other girls. It's the same even now with Jiu Jitsu. Even though it would be awesome to have other girls join in, I don't mind training with the guys. They actually make me work harder.
Well i am the only girl who stays for JJ. The others seem to leave after Muay Thai. The guys at NTC are some of the nicest guys.. I am 5'6 and 123 pounds. so i am not that big, but the guys dont muscle me around and they respect me and help me out alot. they also let me know that when i pull a technique and they muscle out dont tap to it taht it would work on someone my size
well said kendra:)
rolling weds/thurs at Burbank with Kendra I hope...whomever can be there, be there:)
I'm BACKKKKK! I finally signed up on 10thplanetjj.com!!! Oh, how I have missed you guys! A random question, anyone know how to resize a picture for my profile picture?? How are you all doing???
I just used this site: http://www.shrinkpictures.com/. It worked great. Just keep in mind that your profile picture is a different size from your avatar, so if you use the same pic you'll have to resize it twice.
Thanks to Lili and Dawna for rolling with Kendra at Burbank. I think we all had a great time...ok maybe not Lili, lol:) but it was very cool. Next time we for sure gotta swing a bigger HQ meet and Burbank meet. AND I forgot to get a pic! lame:(
Kendra thanks for the rolls, you are doing great and have an awesome attitude, keep up the good work. And RW is super cool for being so willing to go the extra mile for his students!
