This question has been answered several times if you just look through the threads. Honestly though you’re a blue belt, just train. Now is not the time to think about starting a school. Focus on training and learning the system and getting to know our community. If you’re meant to open a gym the information will always be available but so many steps need to be taken between where you are now and then. So don’t rush it, just enjoy where you are in your journey.
So many people seem to regard 10th Planet as an easy way to open a gym - I see this pop up quite a lot for some reason. You currently train at CSBJJ, why aren't you opening an affiliation of them somewhere?
10th Planet coaches and moonheads have put in the hard graft on the mats and on the competition circuit to gain the relevant skills, knowledge and experience required to run a grappling club and curriculum. If you were to open any business where you are teaching people, you'd expect to have a very high standard of your own education - perhaps even be considered an expert - a few years in grappling usually doesn't equate to that.
that what I just said ONE DAY not tomorrow
It's very hard to come from outside of the system and meet all of the requirements. Most of us came up with 10th Planet in our DNA from day one of jiu jitsu. It is possible though so your best bet is to email Eddie to get the official requirements.
Couldn't disagree more. If you look at it like opening any other business, you do a few things now to prepare. If you, @lattamoney are a blue belt, yes indeed focus on training because ultimately that's the most important thing to opening a BJJ gym. We wear our resumes around our waist. BUT that doesn't mean you can't start preparing now. Boost your credit score, get a good paying job, and start saving money. Find out about the local real estate market and find out a good rental price for a unit. Start small but have a developed business plan. Maybe find some used mats on Craigslist and keep them in your garage. You could be ready by the time you're a purple or brown, but if you JUST TRAIN you won't have the financial resources once your skill level reaches a level where you can teach.
Lotta great advice here.
become obsessed - the rest will fall into place
Build your resume by mastering the warmups, rubber guard, twister and the rest of the system then document by wrecking competitions. Have a business plan and your finances in order to show Eddie you have really thought your plan through and it's going to succeed. Train at a 10P gym whenever possible and build a relationship/relationships and even ask to assist instruct on occasion or whenever possible in order to demonstrate you can instruct. Demonstrate your loyalty by driving that extra distance just to train/learn the 10P system and building those realtionships. Eddie WILL vet you and having built legitimate relationships with 10P instuctors that will vouch for you will go a long way. Follow this check list and your %'s increase, not guaranteed obviously, but increase.
