The way we do it is if you compete in a division and start smashing your opponent in less than a minute then its time to move up. I competed in beginner until I hit my blue, then competed in intermediate for like two tournaments and then moved up to advanced/expert. You learn a lot in the expert division. I am so very thankful for the first tournament I did in advanced. I lost terribly. My plan A didn't work..it was a MESS. I learned more from that one tournament than most of mine combined. It never hurts to try. Just make sure you learn no matter what, remember, its not about the medals. Its about YOU and YOUR jiu jitsu and progressing!! Learn. As long as you're doing that, how could you be approaching competing wrong? :-)
Be one with yourself and know you can do anything when you are friends with yourself.
