Boy, you guys don't have a clue.

Handgun: 1911, why? because it has been around since 1911! and still in use by military and law enforcement today highly customizable and easy to find parts for. 45 acp is a highly effective easy to find roundl

Other gun: M16A2, Why? because again its been around forever highly customizable including the ability to pop out two pins with an empty cartridge and slap on a 308/7.62 and .50 bmg upper in about 30 sec easy to find parts for they are everywhere from civilians to law enforcement to military.

Melee class: E-tool, Why? because it serves as a great utility tool its light compact and requires no special skill to use it effectively my 10yr old son could swing it with ridiculous consequences.

knife: machete

wild card: Remington 870 Why? They have sold over 10 million of them so you can find parts and again they are highly customizable and 12 gauge ammo is easy to come by.

I love 1911's just as much as the next guy, but there is better technology today. Almost all the 1911's you find today are NOT mil spec. This means tighter tolerances for better grouping, alloy frames and slides for lighter carry, and slight variations in construction. What this translates to is a gun that is much more finicky than the good ole reliable 1911 A1. Today's 1911 variations need to be cleaned regularly (as does your ar platform). And while you are correct that parts for a 1911 are more readily available than pretty much any other pistol design in the world, you also will not be able to fit those parts without the expertise of an experienced gunsmith. Due to the changes in design previously stated ( tighter tolerance, alloy parts) almost any 1911 part you find today will require a fair amount of smithing to fit into todays guns. You would be much better off with a glock variety if you want a durable, proven, easy to find gun.

Assuming a long term doomsday scenario where supplies are not readily available also means you cant run down to walmart and buy cleaning supplies and lube. I think you would be much more well served with a rifle platform known for its reliability. Mini-14's are a good alternative to an AR style firearm, but if you want more accuracy, why not just go with an M14 or M1 garand. Both are proven by the military and police. As a 45 man I would think you would also appreciate the merits of a 308 or 30-06 while being compared to an underpowered 5.56 (9mm is to 45acp as 5.56x45 is to 7.62x51).

I like the e-tool idea, and an 870 and a machete are both good selections also. Overall if I ended up with your list I would probably be pretty satisfied, assuming a mil spec 1911 of course.

M1 grand is out, no selectable rapid fire I wouldn't argue over the M14 its a good choice although we wouldn't be the first or last to debate the M14 vs. M16. I wouldn't even argue over someone selecting an ak47 based on its reliability. A glock as opposed to a 1911 is another good choice. As long as your not trying to wield a desert eagle or 44 mag. I will join forces with you or John in apocalypse any day. But we will have to get him to give up his garden weasel for a shot gun. Actually that might come in handy for planting food sources.

The why?

Making my Pistol and rifle fire the same rounds is efficient. Although the .22LR may seem puny compared with some of the Desert Eagles and .45 ACP out there, I can carry far more rounds, acquire my target quicker, and put more rounds downrange faster than it takes to recover from the recoil of some of those hand cannons. A single round can be lethal at effective ranges of 75 yards if I use CCI Velocitor rounds or other comparable hyper velocity ammunition, without factoring in multiple penetrations/rounds fired. Even a smaller round like 9mm is bulky and weighs a lot in quantity, one can carry .22 vs 9mm at almost a 6:1 ratio.Accordingly, that ratio will rise vs the larger calibers. The "hand cannons" and AR's are fun, but self limiting. I can always "trade up" for a heavier weapon if needed. I prefer speed and mobility in a "TSHHTF" scenario.

Meleeing with a fast sword is also a good idea. I would prefer to move around undetected as opposed to being involved in any sort of melee. Survivability is low percentage. Better to run and live to fight another day, than to try and re-create the romance of "Braveheart or King Arthur". See last paragraph.

The Kukri is part knife, machete, axe, hammer, pry bar etc. 'nuff said.

The Milkor MGL Grenade launcher is my wild card. It's lightweight and hold six rounds. Superior to a shotgun as it can fire HE rounds (great for ruining any potential melees), HEAT for those folks with armored vehicles (nothing like a hot molten steel bath to change ones attitude) and smoke (which is important when making a hasty escape). Other round options include any other loads available in 40mm such as riot control agents, flares etc. The downside to this weapon is that like the hand cannons it is self limiting as I would not want to carry large amounts of 40mm rounds. I would limit myself to 12 rounds of different varieties, then destroy and discard the excess weight, or I could use it as a very expensive baseball bat.

Ahah, great dude plan. But I do not agree with you about the AK47. In my opinion, she has problems with moisture protection. I believe that the most reliable rifle is the ar15. And if you add to it an increased ar 15 mag loader, then it will be just killer gun. My father had ar15 in the war and it never jammed with him, unlike ak47. So re-plan your doomsday scenario.
