    top five novice techniques... ?

simple question, looking for many different points of view..... what would everybody rank the top five (or top any number) pieces to thier game that a novice should have down in order to hold thier own againt more experienced players.... basiclly , what are the bare bones you can get away with on the ground to survive, if not threaten.

    1. Applying the knee up will save you alot of trouble in the open guard and make it safer to pass. 2. 100 kilos immobilization from side control is probably the easiest side control to maintain. 3. The cross knee pass is a pass that will get to into the least amount of trouble as far as submission counters are concerned. 4. Butterfly sweeps are probably the most effective simple sweeps you can learn. 5. Focus on your defense and escapes as a beginner if you want to survive. This should probably be number one, but it is not a specific technique so I mentioned it last.

There are probably about 300 basic techniques you should know to survive against experienced players though. You really need to study your ass off and get lots of reps and drills in if you don't want to get tapped like a typewriter. My favorite core basics are Marcello Monteiro's White to Blue and Blue to Purple curriculum. It is a fucking expensive DVD set, but it contains all the core elements you need to be a smash style Jiu Jitsu player. I would also recommend Bill Cooper's Escapes DVD and Gustavo Machado's Great Escapes DVD.

Start with the sorcerer and work backwards from there.

Work on the basic escapes, and find one particular strategy for attacking. Build upon that strategy with more techniques. This way you have a game plan as well.
