Kron Gracie on Gi jiu jitsu

"I think what's stopping the sport is the grips. Guys will get a grip and then they'll stop when they want to. It's very easy to do that and it's really hard to break the grips. Guys are taking steroids, guys are really strong, it's hard to break those grips." -Kron Gracie

I agree with the philosophy in theory, but that would be very difficult to monitor and enforce. Especially with guards like the berimbolo (sp?), I watched matches of the miyao brothers and they maintain the same grip for extended amounts of time. There may be a lot of movement, but to award points for dominant transitions seemed difficult, so how would you enforce the grips time limit. Technically they're moving and working, but essentially they never quote un quote pass and at times maintain the same grip for long durations througout the match. Maybe my lack of experience with that style makes it hard to follow, but can you imagine how difficult it would be to actually enforce.

The nba has difficulty enforcing 3 seconds can you imagine trying to monitor grip changes in 20 sec intervals.

I don't know if grips are stopping the sport but I agree that the grips allow you to slow the game down. I remember from my experience in the gi that I was able to generate leverage from the grips in ways that are impossible no-gi. The grips made it possible for me to handle someone 50 or 60 pounds heavier.

The interesting thing was that in the summer when we trained no-gi those same guys that I could handle in the gi were passing my guard and smashing me no-gi because my game was reliant on the grips of the gi. It took training with Eddie to get my no-gi game up.
