He has to get on his side and escape his hips. Keep him flat, keep him trapped. As soon as I feel he can free his hips, I hop up to knee on belly right before and look to be mobile while clearing his control. Timing is huge. If you wait till his arm is locked and he's on an elbow, its too late.

I think eddie menioned the russian cowboy as a counter. You can also try to move to NS or SC on the other side.

seriously guys, a guy I trained with picked a stupid guard jump that a white belt, "Made up" to send to Marcelo through text message and left my elbow push counter on the back burner. Marcelo responded that he had been doing that guard jump for a while and cited comps with the response...I'll just blow err'one up all by myself..."Blame the IBJJF when, in 30 years you see an academy that nails the phrase, "A Red belt is a Junior black belt that hasn't died yet" on the far wall."

I've been having the same problem. I get to twister side control, then I get pushed down to his hips. I did some digging and found a Scott Epstein video showing how to push back off the hips, wiggle and grind backwards to crush the face and go heavy on the arm.
