Not only does this make the atmosphere of the event way less exciting (imagine Eddie vs Royler without the crowd going insane), but I'd have to imagine that a good chunk of their profit relies on the live gate attendance. Not sure how this is a good business move.

No, almost certainly not. For starters you have to rent the venue which is expensive. Then you have to buy insurance. Then you have to hire security. Then you sell tickets. How many tickets are you selling for this? 500? 1000? At $50 per ticket, 1000 tickets, that's $50,000... you'd be really hard pressed to cover your costs with that. Much easier to sell 5000 pay per views with something you filmed out of your garage.

It makes the event look cheap, it removes all the crowd energy, it'll even make the video look weird with no crowd at all.

But in the short term, like for this event, it's almost certain to be more profitable this way.
