Grind Open 3rd Place (Diamond Choke Video)

Competed in a new tournament this weekend called the Grind Open.

I weighed in at 147lb after a decent breakfast, water, and hydrated with no cut for the Intermediate (Blue-Purple) Bracket. Unfortunately they merged the Under 150 and 151-165 Brackets. There were 5-6 of us total.

My first opponent cut from 180 to barely make the 165lb limit and and was a 2 stripe blue belt.

Only things illegal were twisters and slicers. So I didn't try to hit the ham sandwich when he worked the first pass. Also my strong rubberguard dominant leg is my right and I wasn't able to set up before he smashed through my guard.

Here is video of match 1, which I won via diamond choke:

Next match the guy was equally large. I'm honestly a bit upset with myself over this one because I made mistakes that I don't usually ever make in the gym. I feel like I was REALLY sloppy with my top defense and positioning. I wanted to get a von flue and got one track minded with bad positioning. A few good things i felt I did was the rolling iminari attempt and my re-guard which kept us at 0-0. Really wanted to push the pace being the smaller opponent too.

    Match #2:

Due to some weird Brackets and double elimination I had a rematch for 2nd. If I won I got 2nd and if I lost my opponent had another match for gold and I'd get third.

We went on a leg lock battle which is fine, but in hindsight maybe wasn't a great idea when in ANY 50/50 type of position with a 20-30lb muscle disadvantage. After a big scramble of feet and different attacks, we both got toe holds. His didn't feel strong and instead of bailing I attacked one too. His ankle popped 2-3 times at which point he gave it his all and mine popped about 8-9 times with accompanying excruciating pain. Lesson learned. Know when to bail. lol

Here is the video. Loud pop is my foot.. Lol

Tested myself with some big guys and had some good with some bad. He was unable to continue as we both left the match with a limp and torn body parts. His opponent would take 1st place by default and we got a great picture on the podium of the aftermath.

As always advice is welcome/appreciated on all my videos! Thanks

Beautiful kimura to the back. I can tell you've repped that like 1000 times. It looks silky smooth.

Since you welcomed feedback, I would suggest that you don't spin to escape toe holds. I could be wrong, but from what I've learned, it's best to boot your foot and use your free leg to kick the hands off. Someone could correct me if I'm wrong.
