It's always good to check the condition of the central nervous system going into a competition or heavy block of training. The most accurate measurement now is HRV or heart rate variability. While it is still in the infancy of use, it is still a good gauge.

If you are slightly over trained, or your environmental stress is high chronically, this effects the HPA axis, or hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal gland complex. This has a huge impact on recovery, and more importantly pulling yourself out of fight or flight or the sympathetic dominate nervous system.

There are many ways to modulate the CNS to pull you back into rest and digest of the parasympathetic side of the nervous system. From adaptogen herbs, to evidence based acupuncture, to simple breath work.

So if you're going into the competition slightly stressed and overtrained, then it makes it very difficult for the body to return to homeostasis after the initial dump.
