Dealing with a High Level Cross Face

I was rolling with this one dude last night who’s a brown belt and had a significant size (20kg) and power advantage so he was both technical and strong. Regardless, nothing really bothered me during the roll until he started using his weight and was just crushing me with a cross face which really shut down my bottom game. I know with him being way bigger the top game makes more sense but it got me thinking if anyone has his own way of dealing with a High Level Cross Face.

I usually swim off the cross face and finish them in spider web.Im about 205 and it usually works as long as I get my hip out fast enough and i stay super tight.

Sometimes bigger stronger opponents with good technique are just gonna smash you, no way around it, that’s why there’s weight classes. The whole “size don’t matter, technique over strength” stuff only applies when the bigger guy has shit technique and the smaller guy moves like a professional

I use something like this from both half guard and bottom side control. Preempting his cross face and "answering the phone" before he enters the cross face will also help you create a frame before he even enters into it.

The pummeling strategy in these videos have also helped me deal with the cross face both from bottom side control and the half guard.
