    Pull Guard

In my search for Jiu-Jitsu knowledge I've come across many different types of Guards, some known and some not so known. So, in an effort to help educate the new white belt or whomever, I'm listing below the names & types of Guards I've come across. Please feel free to look up these Guards to learn more about them, give your 2cents worth, & post any Guard you may know of that I have not listed. Thanks

    1. Closed Guard

    Basic Closed Guard
    High Guard
    Leghook Guard
    Shawn Williams Guard
    Rubber Guard

    2. Half Guard

    Basic Half Guard
    Deep Half Guard
    Lockdown Half Guard
    Quarter Guard
    93 Guard
    Z Guard
    Half Butterfly Guard
    Instep Guard
    Sitting Half Guard

    3. Open Guard

    Basic Open Guard
    Turtle Guard
    Octopus Guard
    X Guard
    Butterfly Guard
    Spider Guard
    Grasshopper Guard
    Cross Guard
    De La Riva Guard
    Reverse De La Riva Guard
    50/50 Guard
    Tornado Guard
    Upside Down Guard
    Sitting Open Guard

"Pull Guard": putting your opponent into one of your Guards (Closed, Half, or Open).

"Passing Guard": escaping your opponents Guard (Closed, Half, or Open) to a control position.

    Here's a few more:
Shield (1/2-g like Z, but the leg does not cross the body, it pushes the same-side shoulder away)
Inverted De La Riva - start in DLR, switch to your other foot on the same leg, like a mirror to your original DLR, and switch your ankle grip to the other hand. Great transitional guard to go from DLR to deep half, and many others, or to sweep.
    Turtle - it's a guard, technically!
Single-leg X-guard - has like 50 names, but that is what Xande is calling it. Start in X, take your inside leg, wrap it behind and around the non-X-guarded leg of your opponent, and put the heel on his hip (in gi BJJ so that you don't get a DQ for knee reaping). It's been unbelievably effective since he showed us some new sweeps from there.
