Leaning from DVD instructionals or off internet. Is it any good? I thinnk so!

A friend of mine has a grappling school and he and I taught
for years together. We had both trained with the Machados
the Gracies and other including Gokor. Together we collected hundreds of DVD
instructionals and we both taught from these instructionals.
People always thought the techniques we taught were ones
we had learned from live instructors and they were sometimes.
But most of the time we had learned from instructionals. Many
times when I saw him teach even I was wondering if he
learned from somebody personally or from instructionals even though
I knew he had learned off the DVDs. Many times we both pulled off
techniques we had just learned from these DVDs while going live.
I have gone to many grappling seminars and the only ones I can
remember much from are the ones I get a DVD of or later get the
guy's instructionals who taught the seminar. I always film anything
and everything I can and then watch it over and over again. Then
I get on the mat and drill the techniques over and over again.

I'll hear people say that you can't learn from just watching instructionals
and that might have some truth if you don't get on the mat and try and
drill the techniques. But who would watch instructionals and then
not get on the mat and work on them. Many of us live in remote areas
and don't have access to good schools. If Eddie Bravo or the Gracies or
anybody else makes an instructional what is the purpose if you aren't
suppose to be able to learn from them. Of course it would be better to
train with Eddie and any other great grappler but instructionals are your
next best thing and even if you are training with some great grappler
books and especially video instructionals are great. So what do you think?

Three friends and I started in a small garage learning off of instructionals, any instructional, we had em all. After 3 1/2 years one of my buddies went to a carlson gracie school, after a month he was given his purple belt. Now, he is a very gifted grappler and perhaps an exception, but it just goes to show you can make some sirius progress with some decent vids and right people around. After 2 years I was given my blue upon arrival at the same school. Admittedly there were alot of holes to fill once we all made it to jj schools but they didnt take long to patch up...

absolutely. best thing to do would be to watch it with a buddy and try it out immediately. i cant do that so i try stuff i watched at the school, but it can be annoying might forget small little details that make the technique work and then have to go back and watch it again. You can pick up tons of little things from lot of the dvds. ryan hall ones, demian maia and caio terra so far have been the best for me.

Nstructionals are the best. Thats how i learned all of my deep half and 10th planet techs. Watch, drill, watch again, drill again. Remember repetitions are the key though. I committed myself to only doing 1/2 guard for 1 straight year with the north south choke. I became great in 1 year with them and now those are my bread and butters. Its always good to have a few techs in your back pocket that you could always rely on

I agree with you Eric 100%. A person can get beat by a technique they don't
know and you can beat somebody else with a technique they don't know.
    How many instructionals are enough?
I say you can never have enough instructionals.

As someone who's watched instructionals for years but only recently got on the mats I can tell you, instructionals are worthless unless you're putting in mat time. I "know" a ton of stuff but since I've never DONE it, when I get into the situation, I either freeze, overthink, or do it wrong. Every so often I'll do something right, but it's rare.

I notice that what I'm getting good at is the stuff I learn in class because I'm putting in the reps . But the instructionals will pay off in time. I just need to get more comfortable on the mats.

Instructionals are great. Just make sure you actually rep it.

So you didn't listen to him. By the way has that BB made any nstructionals. Would be ironic if he has.
Any way Will, have you seen 101 Submissions. There are 3 Chapters now. They aren't exactly like you're
regular event DVDs. They just show the submissions. You don't have to wait around to see the exciting
where they get the win. You learn a lot about different top grapplers and events too.

101 Submissions, Chapter 1 DVD Rental, Rent 101 Submissions ...
For those who just can't bring themselves to sit through an entire fight to find out who falls and who rises to victory, 101 Submissions trims the fat to offer only ...
