Learned a valuable lesson about leglocks from Snowman Jeff Monson

I met "The Snowman" Jeff Monson at ADCC 2005 in Long Beach, California
which he won. He was cool. Took my picture with him which he later signed I also saw him win Best of the West in person on another occasion.
Then sometime later I took a seminar with him that UFC ref Herb Dean setup.
He taught us a lot plus of course the Monson choke from the north south position
that he got in a UFC fight.

But since I teach leglocks and am really into leglocks it was what he said
about leglocks that got my attention the most. Snowman said that he had tapped
out 100's of times to leglocks. Now here's a guy who has won ADCC more than once or has done well there all the times he been there, won Best of the West and many other grappling competitions and he's telling us he has tapped 100's of times to leglocks. He said it's all about tapping out and then not getting tapped out cause you've had guys try leglocks on you a lot.

By the way, Monson got the nick name "Snowman" in Brazil. The Brazilians
gave him that name cause he's so big and white. He told that story too.

Leg locks are far and away the highest finish in adcc for the last two tournaments.

Could you reword that for me? I'm not sure I'm getting the lesson.

I think he meant high level guys including Monson are tapping to leg locks so you should incorporate them in your game more if you haven't already

Ok, that's what I figured. It was this part that I wasn't sure about "He said it's all about tapping out and then not getting tapped out cause you've had guys try leglocks on you a lot." I wasn't sure what he meant by that. Thanks.

Exactly Anthony. If Monson who is such a high level grappler tapped out 100's times to leglocks and admits it then why should it bother us to be tapping out to leg locks in practice. Getting better at grappling is just as much about tapping out and going again as it is about tapping people out. To some people every night is ADCC. We need to just train and drill and tap out when we need to. Leave your ego at the door. Sooner or later you'll have to tap out less often.
