What is the most effective way to pull guard in no-gi? all i can think of is just jumping and wrapping your legs around them, but it sucks when the person cant hold you and you slam your head on the mat. whats a better method?

Lay on your back and work for a sweep:
X guard
de la riva
goes guard
rep these, i get all kinds of success with X guard :D
If your comfortable in the open guard just sit down into butterfly guard.
If you're looking for a standing method, just tie up with him and throw your legs around him. I usually just tie up with one arm around the back of his head and one arm controlling his tricep. Once you get this control you should be able to jump guard easily (assuming this is low level competition).
yea..i guess you have to hit it hard and pull down fast ..you dont want them to catch thier balamce and they shake u off..lol
If your strong side rubber guard is the "typical" left leg/right hand:
From a high collar, establish an overhook with your left arm. Backstep with your right foot to take his balance; as he moves forward pull his head down as you drop into your guard (like you're going for a snap-down guillotine except you fall to your back). Keep the overhook the whole time and you now have a free NY as soon as you hit the mat. This keeps you in control of his posture as well so he's already broken down when you hit the mat. You just have to swing your left leg up and *bam* you're in NY.
Here's an example (@ about 0:25):

jason i'm take a guess here but your the one pulling ny!
Do what Jean Jacques Machado does. He kinda jumps into butterfly. It's what I do.
if you wanna have his right arm trapped when you land, throw your right foot into his hip as you pull guard. it keeps him away from you and creates angle as you hit the ground. that angle is what creates high percentage offense.
when you land with your right foot in his hip, he will feel threatened immediately. he will often address the threat by trying to push and open your knee. as he does so, clear the head and kung fu. even if he succeeds in addressing the foot in the hip, you will be a minor adjustment away from a carni.
My plan was actually to try to get to invisible collar ASAP (at the time I was going crackhead -> double bagger -> IC all the time rolling). I didn't even realize how hard he was stacking me until I cleared his head and he literally lifted his chin over my ankle. That changed the plan pretty quick. :) But yeah, I never even tried to get my foot in his hip and I prolly should have. Like I said, at the time I was going straight to crackhead -- whether I needed to or not -- in practice all the time. My brain was way behind where my body was in the moment. I was like: "Oh look. I just cleared his head. Hey, I'm almost to a gogo. I like where this is going; I'm gonna keep watching..."
