Have you ever tried to choke someone with their shirt? You can't choke a person out with a regular shirt collar.
your being sarcastic right?
I strongly disagree. The quality of instruction from Rener and Ryron is second to none. No joke. Think of a basic technique that you know well (armbar from guard, americana, kimura, etc) and then watch a video of these 2 guys teaching that technique. I guarantee there will be at least one detail you learn from their instruction that you didn't know before. And yes, they do sell a lot of stuff and at times the sales pitch is a bit tacky, but do you realize that they also give away more free technique instruction than anyone else? They've put out free instructional content all over You Tube for years now and the Gracie Breakdowns continue that tradition. Even the stuff they sell isn't that expensive compared to other instructional DVDs. Their Combatives program comes on 13 DVDs and has 18 Hours of instruction and costs $120. Does anyone else's DVDs have that much content for that price?
As for the t-shirt, you buy the shirt showing how to do a choke for $30 (a bit pricey) and they give you a DVD that actually teaches you a variety of chokes. That way, you won't be walking around with a choke t-shirt without actually being educated about how to do a choke. I don't see what the problem is.
Go on you tube and watch their father Rorion teach the elbow escape or the trap and roll escape. Then watch Rener teach the same technique. It's light years ahead in terms of attention to detail and putting the moves in context.
There's a lot that rubs me the wrong way about the Gracie Academy -the lack of acknowledgement of the legitimacy of the many other contributors to jiu jitsu besides Helio Gracie, being foremost... But I will say it again. The quality of instruction from the Gracie Academy is second to none, IHMO.
I like those guys, I think they are liberal and cool, don't they do that UFC breakdown stuff? I've seen them do tenth stuff too if I'm not mistaken, and I've never heard them say anything bad.
Gi must be good for self defense! I don't know any tho, and I get by just fine without it.
Sorry for ranting, but once I start its hard for me to stop;) Here's a video these guys posted 4 years ago. For free, and its still on line. This is 10 minutes of class instruction -not a segment from a DVD. Do you know all this stuff? I sure as hell don't. And can anyone argue against the quality of instruction here?

Thank you Ric. Now I don't have to type anything. :)
Increase the positivity homie.
Either way, I don't knock them. They believe in their system the same way we believe in ours. And their system has had effective results just like ours. So I don't knock them. I just prefer ours. I believe it's more universal. I'm happy for them.
One day im gonna buy a pack of tshirts and go to a gi school and ask em to try to choke me with them
They are highly trained in every way. I wouldnt be surprised if they had a business or marketing degree. Their target audience is as broad as they can make it so it shows in their salesmenship. High cheese factor, but I also agree that they know their shit, period. The Gracie breakdowns are always on point on what the fighter was tryin to accomplish, what could have been done to enhance the tek, and the proper defense. We do got the cool teachers though.
