ok, i figured our definition of "bows" must be attacking with elbows. But, I am still unsure what dirty south accent means, and what their term "droppin bows" means. Are they talking about hitting people with elbows or is there a hidden meaning behind it?Quote:

Yeah I didint mean anything down, south, slang or dirty. Also I was only talking about elbows on the ground. Thai fighters don't wrestle their opponent to the ground and elbow the in the face. They throw them standing, which is why you see KO's and not cuts. Today's mixed martial artist specifically learns from his instructor to hows to properly throw a slashing elbow to the grounded opponent in order to cut him and force a doctors stoppage.
Training to get the cut stoppage is B.S. for sure. I'd like to see that kind of stoppage considered an NC, but whatever.
I might just be a huge psycho, but I really miss UFC 1 rules. 12-6 elbows are pretty legit on the ground, sometimes...

I guess I am the only person who feels a little differently. I think the point of MMA rules is to come as close to a real cagefight as the athletic commissions will allow. Obviously, head butts and eye gouges take away from the sport, and soccer kicks to the head of a grounded opponent are not going to happen. But in a real fight, if you are good enough to slice someone's head open with an elbow so they can't see from all the blood in their eyes, then you are good enough to finish their blind ass shortly thereafter. The only reason it is stopped before that is that there are chemicals in blood that cause blindness if left in the eyes for even short amounts of time, and nobody wants to watch a career disappear because of that.
I think the real issue, as usual, is shitty reffing and judging. If someone is landing short elbows for show from guard, call it what it is and stand them up. If the elbows are doing damage, then they stay. Tough shit for all the guys who don't like it - if it is effective, learn to stop it. But I find it funny that after all that, Gil Melendez used elbows to end the fight in a brutally exciting way, and even outspoken Nick Diaz threw a few on the feet. The point is, don't take out one of the body's primary striking surfaces ... shoot Cecil Peoples and everybody like him and make sure that refs take careful looks at how effective each elbow really is.
yea, i am with harry. i do hate to see fights stopped because of cuts, though. but, elbows on a grounded opponent is probably my favorite thing to see:o i love them!
mma is a fight simulation. That's all it is. It's putting two people in a cage and seeing who will win if they fought to the death. They just stop the fight early to keep the other guy from dying, that's all. And in a life or death situation elbows on the ground would open up a cut, bleed into the other guys eye, and he would eventually be blinded and finished. Unless he's Frank Dux. These guys are gladiators and it's a perfectly logical way to finish a fight.
And MMA IS a bloodsport. that's why we all love it so much. It's the only sport left for true warriors. The closest we'll ever get to Pankration. Let's stop looking at the word bloodsport as something dirty and see it for what is really is, beautiful.

Maybe it's true that at that point you already know who will inevitably win, but you might also say, hey, in a real fight there are still a lot of things that might happen before the sliced guy honestly can't fight effectively anymore. Starting to bleed from your scalp and forehead is a big disadvantage, but maybe you haven't lost yet.

Elbows, on the ground are bad for MMA. MMA is NOT a "real" fight, or even close, if it were, we would have knees on the ground (something that actually ends a fight decisively) and allow upkicks when a guy is on his knees (something else that ends a fight).
Elbows do allow one thing though, and that is allows a guy to lay in guard, do a minimal of damage/take minimal risk, and not have to pass to keep the fight down or to advance position/move the fight along and win.
Dont any of you wonder why the last 5 or so SF cards were overall a good deal more exciting than the UFC cards? Elbows and guys actually fighting to win (end the other guy), and not to simply prevent losing are the reasons. Looks like Zuffa brought one bad element to SF.
