On Ari's promotion I did'nt see Keith Owen choking him unconsious. He wraped up the choke Ari taps and its all good. I understand there is symbolism and meaning to ceremonies like this, but choking him till he passes out is too much.
Yeah I seriously doubt theres much benefit depriving your brain from oxygen.
I think in the video posted - it is stated, u can tap out if you like.Quote:

Gi making nogi better could be purely psychological and a personal truth but not a universal or absolute truth. For some people, its just more grappling and more grappling = better. Who knows :shrugs: I've only been grappling since '07 (besides jujitsu as a kid) and I haven't given the gi an adequate chance to come to that conclusion. I got like 10 gi classes under my belt :-PQuote:

The place I train was at one time a Perdro Sauer affiliate under John Friedland and I have seen the choke out happen as well, but it has always been optional. The worst part I always felt was the gauntlet, it usually takes over a week for the newly promoted to heal from the beating. We are no longer affiliated through Sauer but still keep the gauntlet tradition. Not sure exactly why it is done, just that you are going through a rite of passage. I assume it is similar to hazing in college.
Not commenting right or wrong just that it is common in the area. I highly respect RED Schafer and do not feel he would ever do anything to intentionally hurt one of his students.

And IMO if you get choked out it's gonna take away a lot of the fear in the choke when rolling or in comp causing you to panic less. I had my cousin and my friends choke me out a couple times for just that reason, and it did help. And I'm still perfectly literate and intelligent. It's not like I'm retarded now.
Everyone to their own I guess.
I'd let Gene Lebell choke me out. But on a mat, he tends to drop people's heads onto the floor.
