choking people out, whats the drama?

There were some people upset about Red choking out the white belts getting tested for blue belts. Red says he got choked out by Pedro Sauer for every belt but blue which he received. Some Guy claiming to be a Dr. Was a bit upset that this was happening. In practice, when a choke gets locked in, I will take the choke as long as I can, sometimes I go out, sometimes I tap in time... is this a bad practice? Shouldn't people push their limits? Is this supposed Dr. Suffering from mcdojo syndrome or is this legitimately bad?

Coming from a competition training point of view, weekend warrior point of view, or hobbyist point of view?

Chris, this is off topic but i'm a little confused with your signature GIF with that circle going around and saying it's pi when it completely rotates. maybe my trigonometry is rusty, but is the circumference of a circle 2 pi r so when it goes around in a complete rotation at 360 degrees wouldn't it be 6.28 (2pi) and not 3.14? wouldn't it be at 3.14 when the arrow goes to 180 degrees halfway around the circle?

It seems really stupid to me.

There is risk involved whenever you play a sport. One of the risks in jiu-jitsu is that you can be damaged from being choked, but of course, if you tap in time you are less likely to be permanently harmed.

But this, where you let someone choke you unconscious, is just plain stupid. It doesn't make you tough, it makes you a follower. I'm sure if we rolled, that Red guy would be able to choke me out if he wanted to, but I wouldn't just let him do it.

Yes it equals 2pi r or just diameter times pi, and they show 4 diameters, not 4 radii (sp?)

I feel qualified to answer this question being a maths teacher: The distance across the circle is the diameter, or twice the radius. The gif starts off showing you that the circle has a diameter of 1 unit. The circumference of a circle is calculated as pi x diameter, which equals 3.14159 in this case (to 5 decimal places).

I think you have confused the diameter and the radius, which is half of the diameter.

Did you know that Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion decimal places?

I personally look @ it this way. How many people do you see lifting a hand to tap and wait 3-4 seconds before doing so? As if they are unsure on whether or not they will or will not survive the choke? That's 3-4 seconds that you could keep fighting or be playing possum. So is this a way to get comfortable with getting choked? Maybe. I notice a lot of people tapping prematurely or giving up prematurely. Whether this is merely Padro Sauer tradition or something eluding to opening up ones comfort zone. I am not sure. I don't do gi, so traditional rituals are a bit foreign to me.
