This is why we can't have nice things
Dave trains in a gi...Dave is a closet Gracie Barra guy..I saw him grabbin' grips the other day.
Here's my take. Why do half a tournament? Took off work, trained your ass off, traveled, paid.. If there's still dudes that wanna wrassle I'm game. Pajamas or not.
I def use 10p in the gi. But I also grab the shit out of his while defending mine.
Also I LOVE gym hopping and many are gi. Their house their rules.
I personally enjoy throwing the gi on and working my no gi game. It will frustrate the hell out of you when your opponent grabs the shit out of your kimono, but it's a good substitute to no gi training if you have say one no gi class a week and maybe have a no gi competition coming up.... If you have the discipline!
With you maybe. But that other kid is being very condescending and insulting and it's not the only time. I'm sure he feels confident in his attendance belt, but it doesn't change that he's a douche. Acting like he knows me. Acting as if I believe this solely because of Eddie Bravo.
I've been a believer in No Gi before I even heard about the rubber guard. I was a fan of JJM before I knew who Eddie Bravo was. Calling me a lemming is out of line.
It has helped my defense for the simple fact I get caught more. Less now but the beginning was rough .
[QUOTdidn't miss anythibgid Rosado;215795]Did you completely miss how Marcelo used the gi maybe 20% of the time?[/QUOTE]
No I didnt anything, and what does it matter?
Marcelo uses and teaches Gi grips, Marcelo uses and teaches collar chokes, Marcelo uses and teaches sweeps with the sleeves and belt grips
You are grasping at straws and have moved the goal posts on the initial point which I have made and proven multiple times between Marcelo actually rolling and referencing mginaction which I was on for over a year
Yep
This whole gi makes your no gi better or no gi makes your gi better is somewhat irrelevant
Training in the gi makes you better at jiu jitsu, training no gi makes you better at jiu jitsu, they both help you get better, they both have there advantages and disadvantages
No I didnt anything, and what does it matter?
Marcelo uses and teaches Gi grips, Marcelo uses and teaches collar chokes, Marcelo uses and teaches sweeps with the sleeves and belt grips

I'm not grasping at straws. He's on record saying that he uses mostly no gi grips since he trains half/half gi/no gi. He's on record saying that MOST of the time, he's using no gi grips because it translates to both better. That's the point I'm making. That's the point the videos of him rolling makes. Does he use the gi? Of course. Is it critical to his game? No. These are the facts. And that's his philosophy. And that's why there's merit in quoting MG regarding the virtues of no gi. I don't get why that's hard to get.

Did I ever say Marcelo is dependent on the Gi? No, that was never the point and that's why you are moving the goal posts
Me - Marcelo uses gi grips and gi chokes
You - When
Me - Shows recent video of Marcelo using Gi grips and gi chokes against a world champ
You - I'm not convinced
Me - *confused*
Then I suck at communicating. I guess we were arguing different points and I had an imaginary debate. My bad. I thought you were counterpointing to the opposite extreme. Like you were saying Marcelo always uses the gi even though on video he rarely does. So if you're not saying that Marcelo is gi dependent while in the gi, then I've been arguing with a wall. My bad.
Does this guy think Eddie would call Jean Jacque a d bag for wearing a gi???? Highly doubt it. Jiu jitsu is a sport sports are based upon the rules you and your opponent agree upon. If you have an MMA fight you better do some no gi. If you're trying to win the pan ams, it wouldn't hurt to pull your gi out of storage!
Read what I wrote. JJM was my hero way before I even knew who Eddie was. I don't hate the gi. But unfortunately, from my experience, you're more likely to encounter a douche in a gi than without. Not saying they're all douches. Just saying some guys fit the criteria of being a gi douche.
And I agree with Marcelo that a good style to have is mostly no gi as he demonstrates. I roll in the gi. I just use a primarily no gi style.
Thats why I said eddie took Marcelo's comment out of context and he actually changed it, that's what I was correcting
No worries
So I just rewatched that Rolled Up episode. Marcelo says a lot of really interesting things in there. Some of it I think is way more controversial than what we've been talking about. For instance:
1. Gi is easier
2. You have to be a Black Belt in gi AND a Black Belt in no gi.
3. Arm Triangles and Footlocks are inefficient.
Joseph and David, y'all should take the pecker measuring to a private message and leave the forum to civil discussion. Y'all are both being pretty ridiculous to each other.
I think he meant Gi is easier to learn at first
Yeah, Marcelo is awesome but everyone doesnt have the answers, arm triangles are foot locks are great for a lot of people
Everyone has their preferences
I feel like we are all beginning to make up.
I have a novice question ,if you purposely freak out and try your hardiest in the Gi wont your opponent have fucked up fingers after?
Thats why you have to be careful about screaming from the rooftops and saying someone's word is law
"See, Marcelo says use no gi grips when training Gi! Wooooooo!!!!!"
"Oh wait, he doesnt like arm triangles and Darces? That doesnt sound right..."
In the Rolled Up episode, Jake was the one who brought up that Marcelo uses mostly no-gi grips when he rolls and competes. Marcelo agreed. He said it was because he didn't want to confuse the students.
Marcelo's philosophies seem to be to play a very narrow game and only practice and use what he considers to be efficient techniques and strategies. Inside his academy, he seems to want to teach a wide variety of techniques and strategies. That makes sense, as you want to give your student base access to a large breadth of techniques so that they may dive in depth to the strategies of their own choosing.
That's what Eddie does. That's what I do. That's what most good instructors do in my experience.
And after Marcelo had Riccos back a bunch of times and didn't sub him, what did he sub the 250 plus lbs dude with?
A foot lock, I think it was a heel hook actually
