Question about Lockdown > Whip Up

When you have your opponent in Lockdown with double underhooks, are you positioning your body/butt/hips at a slight angle (hips slightly out) before whipping him up? When I have a guy in Lockdown with double underhooks, especially a 230 pound guy on top of me, and if I am flat on my back with double unders I am getting crushed and it's difficult to get the momentum to whip him up, even if my whip up takes him to a slight angle, it's the initial attempt to whip up that feels like a struggle sometimes.

For me, the whip up is almost always a timing issue.

I get crushed by heavier guys too, unless I really fouc on using my legs and core to do the heavy moving.

My 2 cents----Remember, It is easier to move yourself than the opponent. Unless he is squeezing the crap out of your head, I can usually manage this. Drive my knees up his ass and hold him in place with my double unders for just a second Then I move myself beneath him,as I shrimp my ass out to the side and DIVE for the prefect doubles. I'm 150 and routinely roll with 200-225 pounders. If you get smashed and "whizzard" half way into your drive, try for the Mechanic right away. They usually try and smash you back to your back. Use that momentum. Like Brandon said "timing". I'm still working on what to do when my head is getting crushed. I'm really working this shoulder lock thing that that has good potential. Hopefully post a video on that someday.

It really is much easier to move yourself than to move a big guy but what really help get that whip up is using that lock down to lift and move your opponent around in general. Really stretch that lock down out and when youre whipping up really lift it up. That will help get the weight moving. Im a smaller guy too and this has helped me get people moving

For me I start my lock-down whip up on my side and as i lift the leg i turn to my back to throw my opponent's balance off, and rock back to my hip to take the back or come out the other side for an electric chair sweep. If he has a wissor pinch his arm w/ your forearm to your chest roll to your back with the whip up, rainbow your legs(to lock-down side) continue the roll to top half. Technique i got from one of Marcelo's blackbelts.

Don't stay flat on your back, long as your constantly on your side, you'll always have the angle you need to A) avoid being crushed and B) set-up the sweep you want. Never break your double-under grip, just swivel it around to the ribs and constantly squeeze tighter and tighter as you shrimp out. The timing part of it is using your squeeze to faciliate your shrimp so that it's all one move basically. Now go kick some ass C-bass!

Also, if you transition to Z guard when you get caught flat on your back it should help create space so you don't get crushed. It's also easy to transition to the dog fight or butterfly guard from Z guard.

I found that if the guy I rolling with a lot bigger than me (often) BUT is not very experienced, you actually can let go of your under hooks for a second and push him with your thumbs in his armpits as you whip. This is only a possible advantage if your trying to sweep with old school though, if your trying to get to dogfight then IME, you couldnt get better advise than Compella gave above. Im just starting though so I might not know what Im saying.:)

If ur have shitty under hooks(ur hands are barely in an S grip, no where near perfect DU's) whip back then whip up to perfect DU's.

The whip back is like a plan b attempt designed to get dude to pull out his whizzar to base, then you whip up right to perfect DU's :)
