I started BJJ in Feb 2009 and went out for the first time today. It scared me a little honestly. Baseball choke in the GI and it seemed to happen really fast. I remember trying to sit up afterwards and couldn't. Couldn't speak either. Also felt myself jerking a little bit. Similar experience anyone?
The first and only time I went out I was a whitebelt.
I remember everything went black and then when I came to I knew I had been out but I just grabbed the guy and spun for an armbar. Apparently he still had the lapel gripped and just choked me out again really quick because I didnt fully catch my breath. then I woke up the 2nd time and I was in his armbar. :)
Hasnt happened since then.
You never know your limit until you go too far!!! Should happen to everyone at least once, I figure. But only do it with partners you really trust to let go fast. Good Job Will, you must be training hard.
I've almost went out once or twice fighting triangles. I'm not a fan of going to sleep, it scares me. One of our blues either darced me or neck tied me and when I went to tap I was tapping air, I couldn't find his body and from the choke i couldn't speak it. I should of tapped with my feet but just didn't think. Anyway I finally tapped him and he said I wondered why u didn't tap I knew it was in right and had to hurt. Now what if I went out and he didn't notice and kept squeezing? How many people even experienced people would catch their opponent went to sleep?

Thats how you know when they go out.
I know what happens but I'm saying if your darcing someone and they go limp u may not be able to tell. Atleast with a triangle you're looking at them and can visually tell. I'm saying how many people would actually notice the other person going limp and whatnot especially the inexperienced
During one of Denny's seminars, (we were working on the 10 Finger Guillotine), I briefly put my partner to sleep while performing a guard/side-mount/mount 10FG combo...and I'll admit, that I didn't really notice at what point he went out, but I remember he felt a bit softer than normal once I got in top position with that choke. Since I didn't get a tap, I just let go to check, and sure enough...he had gone out. He got right up afterward though, and eventually said something like, "I think I was out..." :P
Can't say enough about quality training partners on this subject. Partners that have your well being in mind, over their ego/personal agenda. If a noob slaps on a guillotine because it is easy, and you were just playin' just to see and he just cranks, that is not the time to push it and try to escape from deep water,just tap early. If a well seasoned training partner/ high belt level puts you in one, that is the time to work the proper escape technique well into deep water.
I'm lucky to have a group of really friendly and supportive, ego-less guys to train with. That combined with the fact that I tap as soon as I feel something lock up rather than fight it to the point of feeling myself start to go out works well. I was told by one of my training partners when I first started, tap early tap often, and I do!

Happened to me just last week. All I remember is my head being pulled up and then three people in my face asking me if I was ok. I was like, "yes, I'm ok. I'm just taking a nap." Then I thought, "Why the hell am I taking a nap in jiu jitsu class?" It was a bit confusing for a minute. Then I went back to training.
I do remember having a dream while I was out though. I can't remember the dream, but it was accompanied by the most amazing feeling of euphoria. I can't even describe it. Incredible.
Almost went out at the Lutador tournament a couple of weeks ago. I was winning by points but the guy got my back and put in a weak bow and arrow choke, we went out of bounds with 12 seconds left. The ref wasn't apparently up to date on the rules and allowed the guy to sink in a super deep bow and arrow choke. I was nearly out when the match ended, I didn't want to tap being so close to winning the match and having been screwed over. My vision got super blurry and I felt pretty dang good haha couldn't hear very much either.
I'm a scaredy-cat and tend to tap out soon (too early if anything). But I wanted to share this episode of the Fightworks podcast from 2008, which was dedicated to Getting Choked out in Jiu Jitsu.

Has only happened once and yeah very weird feeling and sensation. For me last I thing I remember was that different 'gurgle' sound that you/others make right before everything goes silent. Although I'm glad to have experienced not keen for it to happen again.
Kinda felt like I was in shock when I got home about 30 minutes later and ended up crying my eyes out to my wife. Just had all this emotion come over me. Very weird. Of course that didn't freak my wife out at all. :)
gone out a few times in rolling, just not tapping in time... also once while explaining to the guy choking about the mechanics of the RNC, and once in comp, got caught trying to pass to Von Flu, was over quick....
ive had that, first time i got hit hard while boxing (sparring), the guy got a great overhand right on me and staggered me, i was alright for a few minutes then when i sat down and cooled off it hit me. starting crying and hyperventilating a bit. my coach said it was an adrenaline rush or coming off of one or something.he gave me some cookies and coke and i had to wait a while but it was a mad experience.Quote:

I put somebody to sleep with exactly that choke you describe once- for some reason he didn't tap, or if he did it wasn't clear enough. It scared me too - I thought I'd killed him! I normally like to wait to tap until the blackness closes in to about the edge of my eyes, guys are normally good about releasing the choke quickly. SOme are not.
I went to sleep once and remember having a short dream about driving my mustang with the top down through a winding road. Very vivid, only lasted about 4 seconds though, woke back up with the guy was still trying to choke me. He never knew I went out. I don't roll with him anymore.
Went to sleep the first time in my last fight. Thought I was ok and might have a chance of escaping or I wouldve tapped. I was dreaming about some nonsense then noticed I wasnt in my bed. Luckily the last MTS showed me exactly what Ive been doing wrong for a while now.
