Visiting Head Quarters.
Jiu Jitsu Unleashed bought it 8 years ago I think and still have it and look through it!
At first I was interested in 10th Planet from listening to Joe Rogan's podcast and what a positive light it casted on the sport. Then I was fortunate enough to have a friend refer me to the squad at 10th planet Allentown (now 10th Planet Bethlehem). Their positivity and care for their craft got me hooked. A lot of other places seem to have a culture of "who's toughest" with everyone trying to beat each other into as many submissions as possible. Rolling with the guys at 10th planet I felt safe, and wanting to continue after my first few (gratis) classes. If I didn't have such an awesome culture from the jump I'd probably still be trying to curl and press my way to fitness and not be nearly as happy as I am after class with Zach Maslany and John Michael Holland.
In short, TOAD IS HOOKED ON THIS 10TH PLANET SHIT BITCHES !!! MUAHAHAHAAHAHAH
Mike Lullo running through the basic path and gogoplataing me, it was demoralizing and intriguing.
No gi. I never had an interest in wearing a gi.
Creativity. I liked that the moves weren't the same old same old that I've seen everywhere.
Finish based philosophy. I like the idea of hunting for the submission.
Cool ass people. You'll have a hard time finding a cooler group of people to roll with.
The biggest reason: Paths. I love, absolutely LOVE the fact that 10th planet schools don't just learn one thing one week and go onto something the next. I love that I'll start with a pass...and rep that like 20-30 times before we even get to the sub...and when we get to the sub, we rep both the pass AND the sub..the WHOLE path.......and we do this until Coach Zog feels we understand it. So that's a minimum of two weeks of reps of the entire path so by the end of it I would've repped the path until it's second nature. I mean, seriously, it's been a year since I trained with Coach Zog, and I still hit my paths while rolling. It makes my training partners think I'm better than I really am.
My husband spent most of his time at the gym. Showed me some things, was interested but had no girl/lady partners to learn with so I would just hang out and watch. I knew a lot of the names to moves and subs before I started. Finally got a stable partner, needed to lose some weight and had no hobbies..so it was on. Did my first tournie, 2nd tournie, realized I need to roll with everyone & up my training time. It's been on ever since. I too love the people in the system. I could've never hoped for something so cool, so family like. I love it. :p Oh, and also there was this want to be a bad ass if anyone ever attacked me. ;)
I wanted to watch the traditional bjj world burn
I started my BJJ journey with a bunch of ronins training out of Eddie's books. Old school is like all I am about still to this day.

Fell in love with nogi/clinching/attacking style!! Similar personalities all around, very family oriented :)
The jokes.
Seriously, when I met Eddie at a seminar back in '09 the thing that made me a 10th Planet lifer was the easy humor he had with the subject matter. I had always had very militant, or "angry coach" style instructors in the past, and Eddie just blew me away with how he tied every technique in with a story or a joke, and that just happens to be the best way for me to learn.
From there the love of the system has only grown.
Saw a gogoplata on YouTube. Hit it at my very first tourney I ever went to. Started doing my research on where gogoplata came from. Discovered 10P system. Fell in love with it.
I was put in a kase katame pin on my first roll, couldn't escape. Hit up youtube to solve said problem, came across MTS there, bought the DVD's and now RG, lockdown/ double unders, and spiderweb are now my go to game. Once again THANKS EDDIE!
This is pretty interesting as quite a few people have similar journeys....I myself hate wearing a guy, it's impractical in my opinion. I also don't like the whole parading around with a belt round my waist mentality found in other styles (not just JJ). It isn't for me, the concept of an entire system dedicated to working without a Gi was my main attraction...I am looking forward to a long and rewarding journey within 10PJJ
While training in traditional jj I had no real game from my back but was very good at controlling from the top. while I was deployed i was searching on youtube and came across some "basic path" video while Eddie was up in Victoria, BC. I started working the basic path and then ordered his rubber guard dvd set and continued to study it while deployed. now i am pretty dangerous from guard in both tourneys and mma. i like the system because that's what it is. a system that leads you to a variety of options from each position not just throwing up wild arm bars and triangles that anyone can see coming from a mile away. additionally, eddie teaches nothing is 100% but this system tends to raise your %'s when you attempt a submission or sweep if done properly. also, i really like the family/team concept. i've been all over the country and nearly everywhere i go when i have a tenth planet shirt on, someone from a differnet moon will come up and talk to me. 10PFL!!
Gray...how are you pulling off Old School now that everyone is darce crazy. I stopped last year because two guys at my school guillotine my ass every time.
This! Lol Jk
My husband has been studying for years. I was around it but resisted learning for the longest time because that was his guy time, his time away from home and every day problems. After I lost a bunch of weight I felt more comfortable and he needed a dependable training partner, so I decided to learn to help him. Then I began to love it and now of course hate that I resisted it for so long!!!
Several interesting things happened to me on my path to the system:
Trainined in the gi for almost 2 yrs, then the first time I rolled no gi I had no idea what to do. All of my attacks relied on the collar!
I had heard of some guy named eddie bravo at my school, but the advanced belts mentioned that he was a phony.
I was Jason chambers on the Human weapon, talking about how his instructor was the first one to tap out a gracie in competition. At the time I was kind of upset that it wasn't someone from my school!
My original instructor was Brazilian and he was on roids, so needless to say he had a large ego and anger issues. I ended up leaving the academy. While in training limbo I happened to discover MTRG book and I finally found out who this eddie guy was.
I've always been pretty flexible, so I was eager to try it all out! After a little while of drilling moves with my bro, I tried some rubber guard out while rolling with a blue belt friend at my apartment and tapped him out with a go-go. It was the first blue belt I ever tapped!
After that I became a deciple, spreading the 10th planet ways! haha
It just so happened that the only other school besides HQ at the time was in PHX. I was in Tucson at the time, so I would make trips up to PHX at the time to visit Mr. Botello. It was really cool to be at an actual school!
For a while I trained in boston at a gracie barra school, where I was the "10th planet guy". Then I eventually made my way out to LA to live for a while, where after 4 yrs I got my blue belt and then eventually my purple belt from Eddie.
I've been enjoying the ride and im really happy I have my students now how are mastering the system everyday just like me!
In my case, blind luck. I went down with roommate who knew Eddie through Joe Rogan. Eddie gave me his Twister DVD, and watched it and listened to his arguments and felt that they made sense. I never considered any other options.
I'm liking the stories on here...Keep them coming, I originally come from a self defence style background...Someone mentioned BJJ as a good SD method but with the whole Gi approach it was just beyond ridiculous to be honest...I'm glad I've found 10PJJ especially other people teaching over here in the UK...
