The Dojo Storm!

So, I know it happens at every gym. But lately we have had a TON of visitors/challengers from local jiujitsu and mma gyms. I credit it to Barncat tearing up the comp scene and the future opening gym. Some of these guys are nice, good people just seeing what all the hype is about. Some of these guys come in, disrespect, flaunt their credentials ("I'm a rainbow belt under Richard Simmons") or whatever fruity gym they are from and expect to crush us.

This is just one story: so one guy was an instructor at a local bjj/mma gym. Came in saying he's done bjj for 9 years and wrestled for 3 years in school (probably true). The ostentatious douchebaggery radiated like a douche-aura around this guy. So Barncat is showing a move (prison guard), when he disrespects yet again and blurts something I can barely make out, but it was "blah blah blah rubberguard bullshit". Barncat handles this so professionally, and decides technique practice is over an the rolling part of class is starting early. Barncat get him first and mops the floor with his face... I've never seen someone get crushed so bad.. Fun thing was, I got him next! Yah!!

So, anyone got this level of dojo storms happening at their gym?? Other Instructors coming in to crush us, then leaving with their tails between their legs.. It was pretty epic.

Used to happen. Doesn't happen anymore. :)

Keep a camera handy for moments like this. The story will get reversed when he gets back to his gym unless you tag him in the video on Facebook.

We have been dealing with that except everyone has been real respectful and wanting to learn and chill. Me and Jon were just saying how cool it is to defend the honor of the school on a daily basis and roll with all the visitors.

Most are very cool. But theres been a couple, this guy especially, that are not so cool.

I keep a couple guys on hand to settle them down. We just had a Gracie humatia brown belt roll through. He had a pretty rough attitude. As soon as rolling started, before I even got the timer going, one of my blue belts was all over this guy. These people tend to quieten down after a blue belt or white belt runs through them.

Its always the same lame excuses as well. "Oh, its so much different without the GI" or "my cardio is not good right now". There are a few more but everybody in the room knows.

Scott: whenever you need to borrow a camera, let me know. Heck I'll be the camera man, yall know I take video of everything. I would pay to see that match between that rude dude and Brian...:)

I train at a Catch Wrestling gym, so yeah you could say we get challenged a lot.

It doesn't matter what Martial Art or program you run, there will always be those who challenge the coach for various fucked up personal ego reasons. They usually don't last long, and are filled with excuses.

Just make sure if you are the instructor that you move with him first. The last thing you want is for some challenger to have a little game and injure one of your students. Plus then you know who you can match him up with and who you can't. Don't be the instructor that passes those dudes off on your students for whatever ego reason you may have.

This is important. Has to be the instructor. As eager as the students are, it must be the instructor for safety reasons and for establishing the tone of class and rolling. This is a big part of your job as an instructor, handling anyone that walks through the door.

I did squats yesterday.

This shit used to happen way more in my first three years as an affiliate. Then it slowed right down as we began winning and medalling at every comp we entered.

In my first three years it was happening every week. We would even have national, no gi champions and MMA guys come thru regularly back then.
These days, people are more aware that we have our shit together and so the ones that come thru are pretty cool, but they still behave/show their egos with things like.."i need a break for a round.." because they are so gassed.......Funny thing is the entire class is still rolling non stop. Thats got to fuck with their heads for sure. A lot of them want to drop in to test themselves or the system and fail badly. The really good ones don't show at all, as they have their shit together and love rolling in their own schools. But the ones looking for a scrap will show for an ego stroke, then fail miserably just like the example from Barncat (you freak).

Heres my take on it.

If you treat them respectfully and just roll respectfully with them, they talk shit on you. .."Ahhh he did nuffin to me.."
If you smash them, they don't come back and they certainly don't say shit to anyone. But who wants them in their academies anyway.

So I say kill them with kindness then kill them on the mat. Works for me.
If they have any worth they might suck it up and continue which is so rare.

I have students all round Oz and I get stacks of txts about guys dropping in then leaving with their tails between their legs.

Its funny you know, you would think that it is a great thing to go visit a school and get whipped and learn something from it, but sadly, you only get the trash come thru, so thats why I always go for the kill, unless they present themselves in a cool way, but even then, I always go for the tap as quickly as possible and as often as possible, to at least make it a worthwhile experience for me. I mean who doesn't love fresh meat right? The best thing you an do is show your technique and not your temper.

I love this.

But as a member of a gym I was one of the dogs. When the owner caught the vibe, I was called to sic em'. As an instructor I also have complete confidence in several of my guys to put it on them. If he gives them a hard time, I roll with him. If he powns me I sic Jonathan or Jeff on him. If he destroys all of us, I make him a friend and training partner.

i have to admit you guys are crazy. i spose i was kind of one of those guys but i was coming to learn. i entered with respect and left with even more. 10th planet melbourne is legit as hell guys. and frank is a monster. he may live in the matrix. he moves faster than normal people :D

This thread is fun! I was hoping to get more stories shared of the stereotypical douchebag meatheads that have rolled up in your gym. Anyone with instructors from another gym come in?

This sort of thing happens a lot in the UK, get gyms sending there members to other gyms to scope out, fighters, techniques etc.

We don't get a lot of instructors. They usually send students. The egos are too big on the gulf coast.

This is the kind of attitude that makes me hesitant to visit other gyms. That's not the way I treat guests, and it's not the way I look at things. I'm always excited to roll with guests from other gyms, not so I can beat them down and show how awesome my gym is, or I am, but because it's fun to see different styles of jits. I don't care about "winning" or "losing" on my home mat. I don't boast about that time I tapped out so and so from whatever gym.

I don't want to walk into someone else's academy and have a target on my back. If I show up at a gym, whether mine, or yours, I am there with one goal, to learn. Period. I'm not showing up to be smashed on and be used to feed someone's or some gym's collective ego. I'm there to learn. To see how other people do things. To feel how other people roll, how they deal with what I do, and how I deal with what they do. I have no secrets on the mat.

That's just one thing I do not like about martial arts in general I suppose.

Word, that's what up. That attitude is very similar here in Fort Collins. There is very little ego here, it's very friendly and chill.

And it's easy to spot guys like you the minute you walk in the gym. People that carry your attitude are always treated with respect and are much more common than the dojo-storm type.
