I float around 115 naturally and I'm trying to get up to competition weight. Thanks to John Mejia I'm focusing on the moose diet as best as possible.
But there are not much training partners my size and I'm wondering what kind of game is advantageous to me I try to muscle my way through but I'm too stubborn to fix that tendency quickly enough.
just work on perfecting technique and to pick up some size get in the weight room and focus on deadlifts, squats, military press and bench--left heavy---and probably talk to a real trainer of some kind. AND EAT A LOT
Yeah, if you're trying to put on size, focus on the basics like Jake mentioned above: squats, deadlifts, etc. When I started drilling the basics, and eating tons of beef, chicken, drinking lots of milk, etc, I really started growing. It takes time though, for sure. It's an ongoing journey, one where you'll eventually want to then loose a few pounds.

Butterflies on butterflies...for a while that's all I had against the bigger guys. Work your butterfly sweeps, create space with the butterfly and snatch a leg, sneak in one for guard recovery. Focus on maintaining your posture so you could sweep and transition. Things like butterfly guard, using your speed to take the back and create scrambles, and footlocks are what neutralize a size advantage. Start playing with one position and that will get your mind working on all the other possibilities

I would agree with Kamil. Butterflies are what Really sets MG up in absolute matches. 2 on 1/ arm drags let you pull yourself around bigger guys to get to the back. Then work on your RNC/back attacks. Then picture MG with a serious leglock game, GIANT KILLER!! Another thought that Eddie swears by and Barncat proves is RG with flying kungfu. Solid butterflies with solid flying kung fu would be a solid base to build from.Big guy with little alien hanging off neck!!

I weigh 125ish. As a little guy, Footlocks, rubber guard, and the back are what come easiest to me.
Try and see if you can talk to Cade Nelson somehow, or just try and find vids on him to study his style. He's a sick black belt under Eddie, and he's also only about 115lbs.

Hey bro, not nearly as small when I started, but I was about 145 and one of the smaller guys. I haven't really done a tonne of weights or anything but have grown a bit and put on some size gradually. I would recommend butterflies like mentioned (but bear in mind it takes time to develop decent strength and leverage in your legs to effectively move dudes twice your size. Anything open guard related where you can keep your opponents weight off of you is also good. I play a tonne of De la Riva and RDLR and specifically developed my open guard to play effectively against bigger opponents. gripping is so key too. Best of luck

Cade is an absolute great guy and a complete badass. He really is amazing at how small he is at what he can do. Wonderful person to train with and to learn from, even though he's all humble and doesnt like to teach much, lol. Cant say enough good stuff about Cade Nelson, really.Quote:

What's up. I weigh 120. Recently became a blue belt, started crossfit last week..haven't really trained any strength stuff until lately. Put your heart into repping. I wish I would have done it earlier. Just started getting into butterfly and club sweeps. I'm getting them on 200lb guys. Rep it on a big guy to get the best feel for it. My rep partner is 190lbs. I've been playing a lot of RG, mainly crack head control. The meat hook is golden! I love the triangle set up. Now I'm trying to work on my sweeps so I can work my top game more. When you flip a big guy over, they don't always know how to handle it and as a plus, when your little you can glue yourself to people.
My absolute biggest tips...T-Rex/home Alone like a beast. Clinch everywhere-top, bottom, everywhere. Practice recovering guard!! I cannot emphasize that enough. It is so important. Shrimp shrimp shrimp!! The better your hip movement is, the better everything is. Hope this helps!

We have a guy that weighs 108. He trains 6 times a week and gives a lot of the bigger guys fits. He has only been training about 2 months now. Focus on moving your body. Don't worry so much about the "tricks" in jiu jitsu just yet. You will learn that the advantage to being small is speed and tightness. Learning how to use those two attributes will help you tremendously.
It has been a big help to stay moving and hugging parts of my training partners
Squats, squats, squats, bench from all angles, pulling from all angles, then look at what debes, ant and sam Davis are doing :-)

Hi Ben, there's some really good advice on this thread. Definitely butterfly and open guard, good strong over hook, and escaping any sub, or being sub proof is essential. Typically, big guys can't keep up with your speed so their looking to clinch you, but you can take an angle to escape. The neck doesn't lie. Get to the back and make it happen.
