I just woried about the stand up part bc at my gym we never do stand up..it starts on the knees all the time..Now i have tooken it upon myself to practice and learn some takedowns. Im 5'9 ding 155begginers pound class ... i cut down from 189 just some background on me...my guard is really good takedown are ok...should i just pull guard from standing or ? sorry if i am all over the place ....just im nervous and dont know how to proceed...?
What kind of competition are we talking about?
You have a great guard Robert. Not sure how your sweeps are from it since we didn't roll a whole lot that day. Pulling guard is definitely not a bad idea, but it is a point tourney. That meaning you will need to sweep from the bottom or submit.
Try to make a Monday wrestling class with Chris Austin. All we work are wrestling takedowns from 7-8. It has helped me tons since I don't come from a wrestling background. :)

Most tournaments only require that you make contact with your opponent before you can sit down (without penalty) and just butt scoot after that fool. So if you're worried about the stand up aspect, then go out there touch the guy and then sit on your ass and Shinya Aoki after him.
Get in close enough during the clinch to get a deep underhook. From there go to homie control standing. Drag him down into your butterfly. Go for the sweep. If that fails, go for the homie armbar. If that fails, slap on a triangle choke. Path of champions.
Pulling butterfly is the best I think, cause you aren't really in any trouble there and you have some good sweeps and with over under you can slap on a triangle pretty fast. specially when going for the JJM sweep
Be ready to sprawl! Act like your going to wrestle him and even drop level once or twice to throw him off. Get a little close and boom...pull guard. If you have a good guard...like I could imagine you having after visiting this site longer than I, then don't beat around the bush. Take it to your world and don't give him a chance to work his game. Pull guard and go straight to rubberguard....or better yet whatever happens to present itself. If you've put in your mat time which I believe to be the case, the only person that has something to worry about is them. Worst case scenario is you get a learning experience and new things to work on and improve your game but depending on the division you enter, you will do quite well.
I use a few different strategies but lately I've really been loving the overhook (yes overhook). It's easy to get because everyone wants unders and I have a few options from the overhook. Most are JKD related but flying kung fu works great.
Coach always says get the overhook before pulling guard. Overhook = hand to mat = free NY as soon as you hit the mat.Quote:

yea ...my takedowns are ok..im feeling only comfortable with pulling standing guard or touching and sitting...lol i am doing begginers no gi 155...
I train the same way, bro, by starting on the knees. I was always worried about getting caught when trying a takedown, but I'm much better off my back, so I just pull guard. Good luck though, homie.

My first match ever was against a wrestler in the 160's division. My natural weight class is 140's. However, I pulled half guard, into the lockdown. Jaws of life, double unders, electric chair sweep into side control, and went from there. I ended up winning by points. If you feel comfy being on your back, and are worried about shooting in, pull guard, bro. I ALWAYS pull guard. At least you're on the mat and not dancing around and losing time.Quote:
