getting my rubber guard passed!

Hey guys just want to provoke a chat on te rubber guard. im getting misson control-new york just fine but at this point i find sum guys are pushin my knee to the mat n eventally passing.

i do squeeze like there is no tomorrow with my knees, my foot is on the hip, i understand if he puts his hand on my knee i have an asylum sweep n if im quick a triangle available, also i know i could use crak head control but is there any other simple technique im missing or is it a case of building my squeeze strength beteen my knees?

well explore the options you just mentioned but I'd say carni soon as they start the pass. then again my RG blows so i could be wrong.

Double Bagger

Crack head control. i hardly ever put my foot on the hip anymore. crack head control to get a zombie or pump then double bag from there on out. don't give up. its tooken me almost two years of grappling to understand this rubber guard. feels good when you get it working.

Clear the neck!!! Getting to chill dog when they begin to pass keeps options open; carni, gogo,...

Don's right. It can take some time to figure out before you're defensive awareness goes up and you properly use the rubber guard. The two most common low level RG killers are the leg pass and exploding posture by shoving off of your chest. Those are technical errors but the direct counters to them (The Carni and the Mission Pump) take drilling and timing in order to exploit them. Your general defensive awareness of where their posture is just takes time to develop as your squeeze increases.

Just yesterday Eddie was talking about how long it takes to really develop a strong rubber guard and how so many guys give up on it because it has to be like a mission to get your rg at a top level. Sounds like you know what to do so keep doing that and rep rep rep! Play with the different options you have and see which one is your biggest strength, then rep rep rep that one. Just don't give up if thats the game you want to play

maybe you should try transition to the pyramid more often.. if he's grabbing your knees or whatever, your gonna know where his hand is, so switch the knee hug to an overhook, grab that wrist and stretch it out, get that knee up over his shoulder. even if youre not going for a triangle, the pyramid is still a powerful position

Carni is the most succesfful submission in the rubber guard bud. Its a high percentage sub. I throw my leg over a guys face if he puts his hand on the mat when hes in my lockdown.

Right when he starts to put is hand on your knee or leg, try going to a TP position rather than trying to lock up a triangle right away. Or even a reverse triangle position. Think of it as steps to get to the normal triangle if you can not finish from those two positions. Carni is my favorite as well, but these are two more options I like. Also double bagger is great but I am presuming you do not have great flexibility/not lanky so I figure this could be a problem.

transition to butterfly guard. they need to get their knees of the ground to stack and its easy to sweep people when their not on their knees, in fact its really easy to sweep people when they're on one knee and one foot, which naturally puts them off balance to one side.

you heard of the elevator sweep? or maybe the stack attack... im talking about the variation when they're on one knee and one foot. iv been drilling it like crazy recently.. its magic.
its a butterfly sweep, with the butterfly hook on their standing leg (use pressure to keep that knee from getting back to the ground), while you swing your free leg through the side of their planted knee. youve got no hope pulling it off if people are keeping base on their knees, in fact you'd probably have your guard passed.. but the moment they start transferring weight away from their base, its probably the easiest sweep out there. you just gotta drill it..

push their hips back with the foot on their hip. if they try to back out then leg curl over their back. if they try to posture up, then double bag or crackhead control works well. what your non rg leg is doing is critical in maintaining control of their posture. work quickly to get to zombie then NY, hit invisible collar. next, pick the sub that would work best against the type of guy you are rolling with.

If I remember what Eddie taught in the Charlotte seminar yesterday correctly - he said that if your RG is getting passed then don't hang out there all day. As soon as you get to NY quickly clear the neck & race to the kung fu move so that they don't have time to work the pass. As mentioned above you can hit the carni or move to the jiu claw or go for the Hazelett.

Ok thanks alot guys n gals. im gonna have a play with a few of these ideas, i agree that i should move fast into clearing the neck n going to kungfu coz i guess if he is concentrating on the pass he prob wont be defending so well. i will also drill the carni like crazy. i like crack head alot aswel.
