So yeah...
tomorrow will be my first ever grappling competition. For those of you that have done them before... mind imparting some pointers or lessons learned to the rookie?
Cheers!

dont lose!
i dunno, its all i got
There have been a couple of really solid threads about this already, but I'll reply here anyway. I just had my 1st one last month. Just remember, it's not some dude trying to kill you, you can tap at any time it gets too much. Stay calm, focused, know that you'll be alive after the match is over. A lot of the guys in the novice divisions totally adrenaline dumped and gassed out right away. You could see it in their hip movement and timing. Relax, breathe, relax, breathe, and only explode when you need to. Also have fun brother.
Ok man i was in your boat not but two weeks ago. My best advice is go with the flow and listen to your coaches. Relaxing may be hard, but its probably the most important thing u can do. Gotta be confident in your skills and use your killer instinct. I found that when i was more aggressive and i was more confident...If he trips and falls down bum rush his ass (tactically that is). I always try to attack and keep him off guard. I think one important aspect though is to have fun. I genuinely had fun at my tourney. Best of luck man, look forward to seeing a highlight reel filled with twisters and sorcerers.
Caralho, as long as you have you gi you gonna be fine!
Just had my first one yesterday picked up a bronze in the GI and a silver in the NO-GI, but all i can say is try things you know your good at and try your best to relax and keep a level head!

first competition i gased and lost to someone wayyy less skilled (not to be full of myself)... but its true... the adrenaline had me calling quits within a minute.. next competition i zoned out and paced my breathing and actions... won by armbar to a purple belt as a white belt going on to blue. lesson learned= keep as calm as possible so you dont burn yourself out.
Alrighty. Off to the rules meeting, and then it will be comp time. I'm bringing my handycam with me so hopefully I'll be able to get some footage. Not sure it'll be twisters and sorcerers though lol. Thanks everyone for the words of wisdom. The staying relaxed thing is always a big help. Should be back with an update later tonight.
Cheers!
Good luck man! Keep us updated!
So yeah... thanks again to everyone that threw some advice up in here, and/or wished me well. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the videos of both of my matches online, but in the mean time I lost both matches because of points. With that being said though I'm cool with my performance given that I was never in any real danger of getting submitted and had both of my opponents in pretty deep chokes right as time expired. I also feel like I got some really valuable experience out of it despite the loses in knowing that even with my only having trained for a couple of days after about a 2-3 month break that I can not only hang with the people on my experience level but come really close to finishing them. Feel like I learned alot as far as how I'm going to have to adjust my style a tad bit in going for both points and submissions instead of exclusively looking for the tap, which is to say that I need to start training some wrestling.
The only real disappointment I guess was that I didn't get to really play with any of Eddie's system. I went for a couple of rubber guards as well as one lockdown, whip up to (if I'm remembering correctly) old skool sweep combo, but having 0 reps on them in practice I know that there were a lot of things I wasn't doing properly for them to be effective. All to be expected though as well as all the more reason to link up with ronins here in CO.
Anyway... soon as I figure out how to get the vids online I'll throw them up in here for you all to check out.
LL&P!
Good job man...getting out there on the mats is what it's all about.
You put your neck on the line and went for it in competition.
Keep training and working hard.
Take what you learned and make it better.
Alrighty lol I know that this isn't anything special compared to what some of you killers have put up online, but yeah...

Not bad man, the points were close and you had a chance to score
a few more, but you know that. What's your weight/height?
Yeah... the points thing is something that I'm definitely going to have to adapt my style towards. From the time I started learning jiu jitsu all the way up to that tournament all I've ever given thought to is getting the tap. Having to pay attention to points along the way to getting the sub is one of the ways I need to expand my consciousness as far as jiu jitsu is concerned. My height/weight is 6'1"/160ish.
