    So yeah...

tomorrow will be my first ever grappling competition. For those of you that have done them before... mind imparting some pointers or lessons learned to the rookie?

    Cheers!

There have been a couple of really solid threads about this already, but I'll reply here anyway. I just had my 1st one last month. Just remember, it's not some dude trying to kill you, you can tap at any time it gets too much. Stay calm, focused, know that you'll be alive after the match is over. A lot of the guys in the novice divisions totally adrenaline dumped and gassed out right away. You could see it in their hip movement and timing. Relax, breathe, relax, breathe, and only explode when you need to. Also have fun brother.

Ok man i was in your boat not but two weeks ago. My best advice is go with the flow and listen to your coaches. Relaxing may be hard, but its probably the most important thing u can do. Gotta be confident in your skills and use your killer instinct. I found that when i was more aggressive and i was more confident...If he trips and falls down bum rush his ass (tactically that is). I always try to attack and keep him off guard. I think one important aspect though is to have fun. I genuinely had fun at my tourney. Best of luck man, look forward to seeing a highlight reel filled with twisters and sorcerers.

Just had my first one yesterday picked up a bronze in the GI and a silver in the NO-GI, but all i can say is try things you know your good at and try your best to relax and keep a level head!

first competition i gased and lost to someone wayyy less skilled (not to be full of myself)... but its true... the adrenaline had me calling quits within a minute.. next competition i zoned out and paced my breathing and actions... won by armbar to a purple belt as a white belt going on to blue. lesson learned= keep as calm as possible so you dont burn yourself out.

Alrighty. Off to the rules meeting, and then it will be comp time. I'm bringing my handycam with me so hopefully I'll be able to get some footage. Not sure it'll be twisters and sorcerers though lol. Thanks everyone for the words of wisdom. The staying relaxed thing is always a big help. Should be back with an update later tonight.

    Cheers!

be careful using rg in competition your first time especially if you cannot do the full lostus.

some people will try to "smash" your rubber guard and it puts a lot of pain on the knees, especially if you are getting stacked
