Mission control tips....

Hi guys, basically i am wondering if anybody has any tips on how to pull mission control quicker? Once i get mission control I have no issues with zombie, new york, chill dog, kung fu move, jiu claw etc, just every now and then a have trouble catching the leg when going for mission control.
TBH i only started using the 10th planet system a couple of weeks ago (via MTS and Eddies dvd's, youtube vids etc) but am fully committed to it, i absolutely love it and am using it every day against guys in my gym. Have also made huge strides with my flexibility and stuff already. I can get into a slightly ugly lotus position lol, get my ankles in and knees to the floor too, and can nearly get my leg behind my head whilst standing but i am just wondering if there is any special exercise or anything you do to help with flicking that leg up for mission control motion? Or do i just carry on with my stretching and daily practice of it? Not looking for any shortcuts, just wondered if there was something you guys do that might help.

You should get the Mastering the Rubber Guard book is you don't already have it. Eddie lays out a lot of great stretches. Just stretch consistently and you'll get there.

I found if you turns slightly to his hip it makes it easier to get the leg up easier. Turn to the hip opposite the leg coming up. I use to do that before my flexibility got better. Hope that helps out.

Pick your openings and make your sure your opponent is well broken down before you try to establish mission control. Having the foot on the hip also helps you get the leverage (i guess thats what you would call it) to scoot your hip back to get the leg over the neck. Also take what people give you. So many people will just give you an overhook, in half guard a lot of the time especially. Be prepared to use a mistake on your opponents part like that to fly into a free new york or flying kung fu type of situation. Good luck.

Basically everybody at my gym has decided to ditch gi work this last few weeks. Someone said it was like a virus, and they are not wrong LOL. :-)

fortunately for me i only ever did about 5 gi classes in total, i always preferred no-gi. Shame i have only just started using this system though. Could be way further ahead by now. :-)

just practice it, When you pull guard in competition, you will have mission control by the time your back hits the matt.

also dont forget wrestling is just as important or even more so as rubberguard if you are starting out

as a 10th planet noob my biggest problem was and still is getting to mission control, i think the best tip i ever saw was from Ramone (blue belt) when he showed me the right way to angle out to my side as i raised my leg. if you lean over to the side of your mission control left your flexibility doesnt need to be as good as when your almost straight with the guy. im short and thick so my legs are terrinle for guard work most the time. but ive started to make it work really well at times, only problem i have now is triangles lol. best of luck on your training buddy :)

Sam since you've only been at it a few weeks the best advice is to just keep putting the reps. It's going to take some serious "time in" to get that muscle memory to set it, and then you'll start developing the sensitivity to feel what’s going wrong. Angling your hips will help, however make sure to squeeze your knees. Once of the big problems for Rubber Guard rookies is leaving the knees wide open when they angle to establish Mission Control, leaving themselves open to get passed.

THIS! Guys will instinctively try pass the leg that isn't used for mission control. Seeing as you're not that flexible, double bagger is not really an option so pinch those knees hard as hell. If he tries pushing your leg down you can always swing it wide and cross your feet for crackhead control. Just remember that once you are in mission control you have time so stay tight and think.

I am pretty sure even though whilst i have been drilling technique i have made a point of remembering to keep my knees squeezed/pinched, whilst actually rolling i had forgotten that part sometimes for some odd reason.
I really want to get my mission control technique really really clean and tight though. As once i get there i am having a lot of success submitting guys in training with gogoplatas etc. :-)

Remembering to squeeze your knees is not the same as having crazy squeeze. Remember there are levels to everything.

No, what I'm saying his you have to develop your squeeze. Its not about how hard you can squeeze. Its about how hard you can squeeze, and for how long. You have to develop a crushing squeeze, along with the endurance to maintain it over very long periods of time.

Ahh cool, i get you now. Thanks. So i can potentially work on that in training of course, and with say a large medicine ball or something too? :-)

Fuck the medicine ball, just work it in training. Every time you pull Mission Control, keep it held down tight and squeeze as much as you can without obviously gassing out.

It's about developing the squeeze on resisting opponents and working through the system of moves. Every time you do it, your squeeze will improve, regardless of whether you sweep, submit, or do nothing at all with it and have to try something else.

Totally disagree in regards to medicine ball squeezing. That’s like saying there’s no need for stretching and working additional core strength and cardio, because you'll get all the need from rolling. Each is a individual skill set than needs specificity training, along with practical applications i.e. rolling.

Training time is just that. Additional specificity training of individual skill sets is what takes those skills to the next level.

Okay, maybe "fuck the medicine ball" was the wrong choice of words. My point is that it is more important to drill and work your squeeze on an actual partner first and getting to understand the little details of the squeeze, especially as you go through the path. But, working a Rubber Guard squeeze on a medicine ball in your spare time will definitely improve your leg curls, and it's also a great tool for your chokes and when you workout your abs.

So are you guys saying when pulling rubber guard starting in mission control it is best to angle your hips to the side of the leg that's up being hooked by your hand? Ex: left leg up hooked by my right hand while I angle my hips and body to the left? ...... So kinda a similar andge that would be needed for a perfect textbook triangle. Thanks!
