Rookie error?

As some of you know, I'm a brown belt at an American Top Team school but have recently been studying the 10th Planet system. I'm starting with the Lockdown and positions from there.

Quick question/need advice.

I find that against some folks (heavier/purples and up), in order to get the double unders or to get off being flat on my back, I have to release the lockdown to post a leg to get some more power to create space.

Is this a 10th P rookie mistake? Should I be keeping the lockdown and drilling the whips more?

Jaws of life, whip down and super stomp to butterfly guard are all must haves. When I can't get double unders ill bait them with a free Americana and hit head and arm choke from the bottom. With that in play it's pretty easy to butterfly sweep to top and finish there. have fun

I would think keeping the lockdown and drilling the whip is a good idea, that seems to be how 10th planet schools teach it.

In case it's helpful, whip up made me feel like a retard at first. It looked great on youtube but if my opponent was heavy, had an arm under my head or they were grabbing my gi (if I was wearing one), it felt weak. Some of that was timing and coordination.

That and this: whip up, whip down and whip back are all different moves for different purposes and occasions. That was confusing to me at first. Systematically, whatever problem you're having, there's a solution, but it takes some poking around to see which technique is the one you want!

American Top Team is pretty open minded, seeing it is more of an MMA-oriented school. (I don't do MMA, to be clear.) For example, Ben Saunders is ATT but as we all saw him with Eddie, he was the first one to pull of the omoplata, working beautifully through the full guard steps.

edit: plus, ATT was founded by Ricardo Liborio who is a Carlson Gracie guy, and Carlson Gracie folk had a huge fight and bitter rivalry with Academia Gracie back in the day over the usual bullshit of teaching different things or exposing it to different people, anyway, it all culminated in the famous Wallid Ismail clock-choke that put Royce to sleep. The original Gracie hunter.

Keep the lockdown but make sure you're really whipping with your lockdown. Like a big arching motion. For bigger guys I really like to use the Fat Whip.
