    The informal nature of the ranking system is one of the great things about BJJ. In Kali we have the same thing, and it means that the rank you have is based upon building real skill, and developing a real relationship with your instructor and training partners, rather than rote memorization of forms, which are a solitary endeavor.

    John Danaher is the man! I like hearing about his philosophies on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu... the quality of his teaching SHOWS in fighters like Chris Weidman and GSP.

    Interesting read... I see the informality of BJJ changing though. With different curriculums like the online Gracie Academy that Rener and Ryron have put together BJJ is moving toward becoming formalized. Danaher's comments seem to describe how BJJ was leading up to the modern era.
